So I just replaced my water pump, all coolant hoses, thermostat and gaskets (lower intake, upper intake, valve covers and so on). I replaced the coolant and bled the system several times. I turned the heater on full blast and let it run and opened the bleeder valve until only coolant comes out. I ran it for a while with the coolant tank cap off. When I drive around for about 15 to 20 minutes it starts getting hot. Please help!!!

Before the work it was fine. Now the temp gauge starts going above normal operating temp and doesn't stop until I kill the engine. I don't know how hot it is, but it is headed to the red fast. I let it idle for a while, 20 ish minutes and it is fine. Seems to only happen when I drive it. I'll double check that in the morning.

My experience with that temp gauge is that you can overheat the thing without it moving above "normal." By the time it moves, you're cooked. I think it moves at 245F.

If you get hold of a laser thermometer, you could check for problems with the radiator. Perhaps you've found a clog in the radiator? You'll know if your radiator is doing its work effectively if there's a temperature difference between the top and bottom hoses.

Ok so I really should get a new mechanic! I went to change the thermostat back to the one one and there it was! The two top hoses are on backwards. I switched the around and drove off for a bit and the Coolant Temp hovered around 210F. Now I feel like an idiot, but at least I have my truck back! Thanks for the advise. I don't think I killed her. There are no strange noises and she runs fine for now. Only time will tell at this point.
