Well, the 4.6 block is cracked in the G4. I think the obvious answer is the 2.8 conversion. Now I need to make up my mind on the tranny. Stick with the stock auto or go for the R380?

Any credible info that could be offered up would be appreciated. I'm leaning towards the 5 speed. Concern is lack of power through the auto, and the question of the electronic control.

I have a newer R380 in my D90, and it seems bulletproof.

It's going to be a lot.... probably 18-20k when all is said and done. Professional install, M&D kit. I'm looking at it as an investment.

People freak at that kind of money for doing this, but what else are you going to get with a new engine & tranny for that kind of money that you can get kids, dogs and hockey gear in?

With this reno, it's going to last years. It's in pretty much mint shape, lift, custom full rack and a roof top tent.

I want to make sure that it's all planned out well, and that I go with the right option.

Lucky 8 swapped an R380 into a D2. Maybe they'll chime in.

Thats my ride now.The 5 speed is real nice especially on the highway going to Conclave. Some times while wheeling it can be a pain but all and all I'm happy with it.

Sweet!! What are you getting mileage wise? How long ago did you have the new set up installed, and have you had any kinks to work out?

Love to chat with you regarding some of the particulars with the transmission / clutch set up.

the TD5 uses the same exact trans as the V8 even, just a different TCM programming.
That's not correct, it's a different transmission internally as well as the shift management. all in all this would be a much faster and easier project and more fulfilling, you can easily tune the motor too. The 2.8 is a nice motor and a good improvement over the 300, but they charge it's weight in gold for it.

The investment is this....

In 5 years the truck will have a way higher value, (and life expectancy) with the 2.8 and 5 speed than it would with a replacement 4.6 (that just may blow up again, or at least need head gaskets).

I wouldn't go for the TD5, it has a history of cracked heads, locating dowel issues, injector, dual-mass flywheel and other problems.

Most Land Rover Forum engine queries in the UK are related to the diesels and the TD5 has more than its fair share. The D2 sold more with the diesel engine in the UK and Europe than the V8, something like 85/15 percentage split.

The R380 is a good box, but get the oil cooler package with it. It is a pumped lubrication design, and needs a 'special' oil MT94 rather than what you put in the earlier boxes. Our D2 has an R380 box.

The TD5 in basic form gives 135bhp against 187bhp for the V8, and although it can be chipped to give more, it is an orphan engine with no other applications and only one generation of production. You only find it in the D2 and Defender.

Diesels are nice and 'grunty', but for any serious towing work I'd have the V8 any day.

come on frank, i did a twin turbo cosworth conversion on a 1986 Ford EXP as an investment. it may not be sold yet but when it does i'll finally be able to buy a used riding lawn mower.

however, in all seriousness you should have heard me complaining in my head while putting that 6.2 in a D1....then someone actually bought it. you could put a roof rack, 32's, and the heaviest slowest diesel in a comanchee and i swear someone on expo portal will snag it up. so the op may have the last laugh on this one.

the best way to make a rover worth more, is to fill it with cash. take that 10K and put it in the back. then you know that it is worth 10k more than it was before.
