idk, I ALWAYS go for the manual transmission when given the option. But my R380 is the slowest-shifting, most vague feeling, cantankerous box I've ever driven. If it were a heavy, clunky "truck" transmission (i.e. Eaton-Fuller) I could forgive it, but it doesn't feel particularly stout either. This one's just a bad design, I'm afraid.

You know differently?

Most get to 100k+ miles before needing repair, and for the number that are involved in serious towing rather than just mud jumping that's what is needed.

That's because they were all replaced under warranty. My Disco is on its third replacement transmission. It was replaced once under warranty, once by the previous owner, and once by me. The Ashcroft tranny I put in it crunches in third gear two years later.

Looks like this project is going ahead. Need to locate a LHD Pedal box.

If anyone has done this swap of a 2.8 diesel and R380 into an ''04, I would like to pick your brain on a few things. Please contact me.

So I gotta ask still gonna drop 20k? Search for Rover Beetle's thread, he did something along the same lines

Try Paddocks, LR Series or Craddocks for the pedal box...yeah, they are UK parts sites

however, in all seriousness you should have heard me complaining in my head while putting that 6.2 in a D1....then someone actually bought it. you could put a roof rack, 32's, and the heaviest slowest diesel in a comanchee and i swear someone on expo portal will snag it up. so the op may have the last laugh on this one.
Mike, how was 6.2 in the D1? Could you elaborate on details?

Put it in any pre OBD vehicle and it'll increase its value. Nobody wants a DII they can't legally operate in a bunch of states because it won't pass emissions. Build the vehicle to keep it, don't build it to believe it'll sell for $X.

I wish I was putting it in my D90' but add 2 kids, hockey bags and a 70 lb. dog.... Yeah, I wish.

This is going to be a bad ass Disco I'm going to keep for a lot of years.

Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of waiting a couple years. We have had the G4 from new, and it's in perfect condition other than the engine. Replacing it with the 2.8 and the R380 gives me a vehicle with no issues and a long life expectancy. I've seen plenty of refreshed Defenders come from overseas with plenty of issues. This way, I know the vehicle, and the history.

It's a rough one to noodle out, but with a monthly fuel cost of $800-$900 cutting that by 30%- 40% is attractive. Gas here is $1.38 per litre... ($4.92 per gal) and it isn't going down in price.

Can't sell me on the gas savings, if your worried about gas mileage, you should be driving a prius...

what kind of mileage do you think your gonna get out of the truck with the swap?
