sweet, I always liked black wheels! It's like rocking the black shoes and black socks on the basketball court!

speaking of powder coating, anyone done that on standard 2000 DII wheels (non SRS types)?

I hate crome wheels, but Nato's are so expensive and hard to find

Of course powder coating might be more expensive, I never done it before.

Wow, those do look nice. Without roof mounted lights there would be no "real" reason to get one, but I bet a hood blackout decal would look real good with those wheels.

This is what I did:

1. Powerwash first while they were mounted on the vehicle
2. Remove wheels/tires from vehicle (duhh)
3. Scuff surfaces with a 150 grit sanding block (walmart $3)
4. Cleaned surfaces w/acetone
5. Masked the tires (it was easy to using 6" pieces of tape. They tuck between the wheel and tire pretty well, hence not having to remove the tires from the wheels) (Also, I assumed the wheel/tires guys would have scratched them when putting them back on anyway)
6. Mask valve stem and lug nut holes.
7. Spray first coat (light)
8. Let dry 1 hour
9. (I skipped this step, but I would recommend letting dry 24 hours after the first coat, then light sanding with some superfine sandpaper) (I have some super-tiny, size of pinheads pimples that a novice wouldn't notice but a professional painter would)
10. Spray 2nd coat
11. Let dry 24 hrs, then install. Be carefull, paint was dry but still had a little rubbery feeling to it.

Total expense:
Sanding block $3
Paint - Rustoleum High Gloss Enamel 2 cans (really a can may do it) $8
Masking tape - free from office :D

Overall, I am very happy with the results and it was really a pretty easy job. The powdercoat vs. paint has been discussed here numerous times so I won't go into it. I "off-raod" frequently and assume that I will be redoing/touching up at least once a year.

Chris,
Funny you mentioned the hood blackout. That is next on my list. I am also building a Mantec type snorkel and will post when those items get installed.

Rustoleum Gloss Black Enamel

OME 3" with 1" spacer in back / 265/75/R16

Front Bumper is a TreK Outfitters but I added the raised front crossbar holding the 3 Hellas. Originally the fogs (2) went under the main crossbar, closer to the grill. It looked like an ARB.

d'you have to do any other mods for the 3" lift? i'm looking to just do the 2" rovertym, but if the 3" works out without any kinks, i'd like to look into that.

That is going to look like total crap in six months or less. That crappy Rustoleum is going to chip and peel. Crappy paint with no primer, that's brilliant! Why would you take something that is virtually maintenance free and good looking and do "THAT" to it?

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. I painted my steelies on the CrewCab and less than 1 yr. later they were looking pretty bad. Just had them sandblasted and powdercoated semi-gloss black for $200. Now I just have to figure out what kind of tires I want to put on them.

I had the alloys on my LWB powdercoated too. I don't think your paint is going to stick to your alloys, especially w/out primer. The sanding was a good idea, but you should have followed it up with at least 2 coats of primer if you were hellbent on painting them.

I understand the paint v. powdercoat issue, but now that I've trodden both roads, I won't paint any more rims.

Keep us updated on how the paint holds up.

Looks very nice, in fact I love it! But, after seeing a couple of folks with painted/powdercoated wheels I'm sold on powdercoating. The comment above, while a little harsh ;) is true though, I've used that same paint on stuff that doesn't see half of the abuse (non-moving parts on a trailer) and it's pealing after a few months. And the touch-up never looks as good as the original coat. That's the reality of it, plain and simple. Let us know how it holds up in a few months.

p.s. this post is going to get crazy by the end of the day

I just don't understand why people take really nice things and turn them into crap overnight. There's a difference between changing something to make it better or more durable versus changing something just to be changing something. I would agree if they were steel wheels and were rusted or all scratched up. But, I don't understand why someone would take brand new alloy rims and paint with cheap ass spray paint just to look different. Oh well, I guess he can just keep sanding them and painting them over and over.

Oh and Bannon88, Blow me.
