I'm geting ready to fight with insurance and the USG over the value of my 04D2. Long story short, a 7ton truck ran into my right rear 1/4 panel here at Lejeune. I have a feeling that the cost of the repairs will result in it being totaled out.

Looking at the KBB value, i might get 7k. Looking at comparable D2's on the market it is closer to $10-15K. Is it a plausible position to try to get the insurance (who will be billing the USG) for a higher value than what KBB, or whomever, will have? If so, what resources can i use?

On another note, try to avoid getting into an accident with a USG vehicle, especially on a federal installation. I wasn't able to get a copy of my accident report from the MP who investigated the accident, I have to submit a FOIA request to get it, which can take 20 days to get. After that, I have to file a TORT request to get reimbursed for the costs of repair.... PITA.

Thanks,
Richard

That sucks, sorry to hear. Something I'm considering is changing my insurance coverage to declared value. While my D1 LSE might fetch $12K on a specialist auction site, my insurance company probably values it a lot closer to zero. That doesn't help your current situation, but might be something to think about in future.

Just stick it out with the insurance company and provide information regarding the actual market value. If you have aftermarket parts then provide a list with cost and receipts. Just keep insisting and keep refusing their lowball offers. I totaled my 96 D1 in 2004 and my insurance company offered me $7k. I fought back, provided backup, and ended up getting $14k. I played the game back & forth with the punk claims adjuster for a week or so, then called my local agent directly and he took care of it.

just gotta keep fighting with them. My wife's 04 got clipped by someone who ran a red light. needed a hood, fender, front bumper, 1 headlight, and one fog light. They wanted to total the thing over a days worth of labor and some paint, then tried to tell us its only worth $4k. You have to do the research yourself and provide comps of other nice '04 D2s. Not high mileage, poorly maintained, trashed interior, bad head gasket D2's that are all over craigslist. They dont understand the desirability of a nice '04. You have to pull comps from dealers asking $10k+. We were able to get them up to $6500, so I took that and the car with the now salvage title, fixed it myself, and pocketed a good $4500.

I did some legwork and assessed the value of 04D2's on BAT. The average price was about $18K, granted some were lower miles, but not necessarily better shape. Looked at another classic car site and they were close, at about $16K average.
