I have got a lead on a sweet deal on an 07 RRSport. It has 57k miles. Are there any things I should be aware of about this particular vehicle model? Are they relatively easy to do routine maintanance on? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I looked at a Sport, but after talking to a few tech's I decided on a BMW L322. I was told the Jag engined trucks are a pain in the ass to do any minor maint on (belts, hoses, waterpumps) and that they (the sports) shared the same suspension as the LR3 with control arm issues. All are just opinions though, but it was enough to lead me away. Post any info you find....and good luck with your hunt...

be aware of the price. you can find a RR full size supercharged for around the same cost as a Sport HSE.

And make sure it has the lux package (wood on the door panels is a give away)

Get a warranty.

I had an 05 LR3 that was a turd and sold it as soon as the warranty went out.

I was looking at an 06 RRS and decided on the 04 MKIII HSE because the engine, electronics, suspension, everything but the body on the RRS is shared with the LR3 and I needed a break from that set-up (rather my pocketbook needed a break). Certified pre-owned has a 100 dollar deductible for repairs... that adds up quickly.

03-05 RR's are junk when compared to anything with the Jag engine. They are more difficult to work on and the parts are more expensive.

check out rangerovers.net they have a RRS section that can offer some owner perspective. From 07 on they have made significant improvements for reliability and parts availability, but I still have a rave manual for my "junk" engine when it goes south.

The main thing about the rangies is that they are relatively unreliable (compared to other cars) but we do not buy them for their reliability marks. We buy them for their owner satisfaction marks...

Get at least a CPO if not an extended warranty. It is a bit of a steep expense, but I have not heard of anyone regretting the purchase of a warranty on these forums. Whatever you decide congrats! You are getting a great rover.

I work on these turds every day, so I'm only speak from my personal experience. I'm pretty sure they recently raised the priced of CPO warranties to over $6k or so, but don't quote me on that.

I believe they changed the term as well to make them almost useless, They used to be 5years from original delivery date and I believe the moved to 4 years.

jymmiejamz has it right, but still get a warranty. They are turds and we love their odiferous existence. :)

+1 To much Ford and Jag in the newer trucks. I looked at the 06-07 HSE, when I saw the jag engine I walked away, and bought a low mileage 05. Try changing a belt or waterpump on the Jag lump of an engine. M62 is a masterpiece of an engine. Very easy to work on, and you see them all the time with 200k plus miles. I can have the rad out in about 15min. Replace all major hoses in less then 30. Try that on a Jag engine. I know the BMW have the PCV, Rad and hose issues, but it's so easy to replace no big deal. Back in the early days of the M62 and AJV8, both Jag and BMW had problems with gas eating away at the Nikasil liners, BMW's solution was correct in using the Alusil, whereas Jag uses cast iron which does not dissipate the heat as well.

The BMW motor is a noisy and leaky turd. Belts are simple to do on a Jag motor, and the water pump isn't bad either. The BMW motor is almost as bad as a disco for coolant leaks, except they don't slowly leak, they just blow out all of the coolant. Try replacing a thermostat on a BMW motor, the try it on the Jag motor. The Jag thermostat is cheaper and only takes 5-10 minutes to do. Radiators are easier on the BMW, but they cost 3 times as much as the Jag version. I'd rather do more work and have a cheaper part to replace.

That's quite true. Parts are generally less expesive on the Jag engine especially the general maintenance parts. Easier to replace those standard parts as well (oil filter, MAF, thermostat, etc.).

In addition, the Jag engine is noticeably more powerful as well as getting much better MPG. The Jag engine had several years more refinement than the BMW and is a better match for the Range Rover.

I also like the smoother 6-speed ZF over the older 5-speed trans and the newer Magna Steyr DD295 transfer case over the NV225 with the BMW engine.

I do agree on the 6 speed ZF, wish I had one. But as far as the M62, been messing with that engine off and on for the last 10yrs or so on 740's, and it is just plain bullet proof. You can't do the 15k oil changes though, don't know what BMW was thinking on that. If they are maintained (7.5K oil changes), they do not fail, unlimited mileage potential. Next to the Porsche flat 6, my next fav engine...Just my opinion.
