It's not a stupid question. You really have to look. because even though your 1991 should have 10 spline at the diffs, things could have been changed over the years.

That is odd that the rubber cap is on the rear.

Take the wheel off and pull the axle, it takes less than 10 minutes on the rear.

I don't know if it was suffix A or B axles that had the stubaxles that were 10 spline. Maybe ago read model year specifications over on rangerovers.net

I think it's pretty common on old stuff. My 1987 d90 had rear axles that poke through the drive flange. I replaced the rear assembly with one from a 1999 d1 and the drive flanges are smooth, integrated with the axle shafts. The front axle of the 1999 d1 has rubber caps on the drive flange just like the 1987 d90 front.

Fronts always have a seperate drive flange which calls for a rubber cap to keep out dirt/water

24 spline factory rears are one piece with integrated drive flange, 10 spline have a seperate drive flange like the front- if you see rubber caps on the rear you either have the original 10 spline shafts/diff (likely) OR aftermarket 24 spline HD two peice shafts (less likely)

Easy way to be sure is pull a rear wheel, remove the 5 drive flange bolts, slide the shaft out and have a look.

Maybe that's when the gear oil was last changed? :)

It's possible if they changed the the housing that they used something identical to what came out. Interchange guides probably don't show how to upgrade! I'm using newer stuff because I wanted rear disc brakes, 24 spline axle shafts to make upgrades cheaper (I can get just a locker and replace shafts later), and to make fitting alloy wheels easier, if I wanted to run them.

I doubt both your axle HOUSINGS were replaced.
That's most likely when the rear end oil was changed.
I usually write on my oil filter when I changed/type/ etc.

Pull an axle shaft out.
You'll know in 15 minutes what you got.
