Anyway, back to the point...

Octane is simply a rating of pre-detination (knock) delay.

The optimum octane rating is determined taking into account the compression in the cylinders and the timing advance of the spark i.e. degrees before top dead center (piston) that the plug fires. Using the optimum octane will result in a perfectly timed spark ignighting the compressed fuel/air mixture and driving the piston out.

Less octane will ignight the mixture to soon and the crank will still be pushing the piston up and the exlpotion is trying to push it down. There are many factors that can effect this, but in a system that works correctly, more octane than required will not measurably increase performance and infact could degrade it as the mixture will ignight after the optimum position of the piston.

It should not, however harm your engine, as it will (if anything) slow the cycle and not put as much force on the piston. There are some situations that an adverse effect could occur, but in basis, you should be OK. It will definitely harm your wallet, though, for not good gain.

But, I am not and do not profess to be a Rover engineer (or even Buick fo that matter) so, take that into account.
