16" wheels..Steel vs. OEM

I have a 2003 Discovery HSE with the 18" rims that I know are bound to get ruined off-road (not to mention the fact you can't find any mud tires for them). I am in the market for some 16's that I will only use when off-road.
Is there a big difference in getting some Disco II 16's verses getting some steel wheels from somewhere?
Where is the best place to purchase another set of rims?

Thanks!

I like running the stock 16" aluminum Mirage rims on mine. I know the offset is correct and I had no trouble rubbing with 245/75 MT's when my truck was at stock height. Also the alloy wheels are lighter so you don't diminish acceleration as much on road.

For just off road, I'd say go with the steelies. They look cooler, and they're much less expensive. They're a little tougher to find for the disco IIs and IIIs than for the D1s, D90s, and RRCs, but I've heard of a guy getting a set of steelies on his D2 for $30 a wheel. You could buy them from Atlantic British for 160 a wheel. Check out local dealers and Ebay too, that's where you can find the deals. Remember the bolt spacing: 5x120mm.

I've got an extra set of 16's from my 2000 DII. Send me an email if you're interested.

finding steel wheels with the right bolt pattern is going to be difficult. the AB ones arwe expensive and only 7" wide. fine if your going with 265's, but most super swampers like 16x8 or 16x10. 5x4.75" bolt pattern will also work, but they have too much backspacing. i ended up getting used stock wheels.

It's pretty easy to come across stock 16" rims (aluminum). They will be cheaper than the steel wheels, because the 16" rims will be takeoff from someone who changed over to 18" rims.

I would rather have some factory wheels....
Has anyone gotten some of the steel wheels that Safari Gard has for DII's....They are 15"....is there any advantage or disadvantage to these...
Thanks

You'll probably have a better selection of tires for the 15's.

I don't know anything about spacing and bolt patterns as I own a DI. I use aluminium rims for off-roading because I only have 1 set of rims, but if I was going to get an off-road dedicated set, I'd go with steel. If you've ever bent a rim off-road you know you're better off with steel because you have a better chance of bending it back. I don't know anything about the availability of steel rims for a DII so that would certainly factor into the decision!

Also, I don't feel like looking tires up right now, but my impression was that these days there's a better selection of 16" off-road tires than 15" due to it being a more standard size, and they're usually a little cheaper too.

I would imagine that 'steelies' for a Disco III really are hard to find! :D

best tip I've seen is to buy 'winter wheels' from TireRack when the season comes around...they are OEM take-offs sold as new with snows fitted and ready to bolt on. I understand from reading a similar thread that you can buy just the wheels.

Keep a look out for 16" rims on discoweb, ebay, expedition exchange, etc. I picked up a set of 2002 16" LR rims in great shape for ~$300 from ebay. Just have to be patience. Also I believe expedition exchange has a set for sale in the bbs section.

Jack,

You have a choice of the plain Rover steel wheel like Series Rovers have, or the steel D90/D110 wheels that are similar but touch wider. You also have the NATO style, also known as the Wolf rim; and the Discovery spare wheel, too. And that's sticking with the actual Rover wheels.....

Shop around a bit, you'll find some choices out there.....
