I have a couple of customers with Disco 3's asking about the 19" MT/R. Part of our discussion had centered on making a bulk purchase and importing them. Do you guys think there would be enough interest to make this viable?

I'm in for 5. I think there are a lot more of us to go for a set of MT/R.

Good luck. These days, between the pathetic US Dollar, import duties, freight and astonishing fuel surcharges, I bet those babies end up costing over 500 bucks each - in bulk - if you can even find enough of them. That buys a lot if 18" rims and tires...;) But if the cost were to be around $350 each landed, some RRS owners would be interested in MT/Rs as well.

Can we all see or is it private?

There's a US tire distributor who was told by GY in February that production of 19" MT/Rs will start in North America within "6-8 weeks"... They (Goodyear) have been telling the same story since 2005.

I have read a few times that it isn't a great tire anyway in it's load and speed rating - that it's marginal at best when compared to BFG quality.

In my opinion, the 19's are for winter or summer tires and 18's are for offroading or all around.

Why would anyone want to take 19's off roading anywhere that the GY mtr tread is needed?

Seems counterintuitive....

True for the Disco/LR3, but someone with a S/C Sport or S/C Range Rover might not have that choice, the front Brembos on those models are too large for any OEM 18" rim. Compomotive in the UK now manufactures an 18" rim that will fit over the Brembo calipers (they became available thanks to the Bowler Nemesis), but that wheel is obviously very expensive.

Yeah, I forgot that superchargers actually go offroad ;) No, really, I wasn't thinking about the brembo limitation - true, a full size rr sc would be fun off road with some honkin big tires. the 18s would be worth it in my opinion.

Todd's experience with them on his D3 was largely pavement with not much wear after 14k miles. Much better than the HP's that were original equipment. MT noisy, but not much noticeable compromise for him. Of course he changed them off just before I bought the D3 from him!
Derek's D3 hasn't seen much use lately due to a new baby in the house, but the one time out at Rausch, he managed to cut a sidewall so he's down to no matching MT spare (we still ahve his original HP spare).

the HP are however total crapola.

again, the notes I've seen suggest the GY MT thing is not the best tire ever made to say the least. I can see it being the weekend set with 20's being the primary set for SC versions RR and RRS.

I run the 19" GY MT/R's and have for a good 2 years. They are great tires. Bullet-proof sidewalls, long tread life, deep lugs and an aggressive look that "mans-up" the somewhat feminine look of the LR3.

There are, however, downsides.
? Cost from the UK or Germany will run $500 - $600 USD per (and that quote was 1 year ago before further declines in the $USD).
? They are noisy and vibrate (I like this as it reminds me I am not driving an X5 or a Cayenne).
? Limited airing down ability due to the low profile aspect ratio.

Mine will need replacing before the LRNR in September and I have given up on promises from GYNA that "they will be available in a couple of months" that I have been told since early 2006. I suggest going the 18" route as much more is available and at less than 1/2 the cost. JMHO

please post a larger photo - that one is TINY.

still, why would you have an lr3 and not 18's ?! I mean, the 19's and tires you have 'look' cool but just aren't as smart off road - or even for tal lsharp curbs in town ;)

My HSE came stock with 19". And since I was able to source 6 almost new MT/R's for $500.00 total mounted, balanced and installed by my dealership it was a no-brainer. I would keep the 19" rims if I could get more MT/R's at a reasonable price.

Yup. Couldn't say no to that offer. At the time I was one of the few people wanting to run such an aggressive tire on an LR3 so it was a supply and demend thing. It also helps keeping me singing the praises of my dealership (Cowell Motors in Richmond, BC).
