1990 RR Offroad Build Up

I have a 1996 D1 so please excuse my lack of RR knowledge. I have a friend who just bought a 1990 RR SWB. Aside from some general mecahnical work he wants to get it "offroad ready." My questions are this.........

1. Any suggestions for offroad upgrades that are RR specific? For example, do this, change that, simply because it is a RR.

2. Along those lines, what about parts. Any parts or manufactures that are better for RR specific parts?

Thanks

nothing really RR specific on it as far as selecting any additional/replacement equipment. same stuff underneath it as on a Disco or a D90 for that matter.

the usual what do you want to do with it applies as to what you want to add or change.

as SC mentions, it is pretty good the way it sits.

I'd first start making sure it has reliability as it is a '90 before venturing too far off-highway with it. wheel bearings, engine tune, fluids, etc..

the list never stops on what you can do:

recovery points; agressive tires; winch; lift with larger tires; HD axles as rears are 10 spline; rear locker, etc.; etc.

enjoy it as it will do more than you first think it could.

I agree with the others. Find out what kind of off roading your friend wants to do and go from there. I would think the first thing he would want to do is springs with a little lift.

I agree with everyone else, it is already a very capable rig in it's own right. But at the very minimum I would echo new tires and new suspension. I have always put OME medium duty springs on unless you have a winch on the front. Medium duty lets you get full axle articulation out of the RR. If he plans on loading it down on long trips go heavy duty. I also diconnect the sway bar in the rear to give more articulation and with the new suspension it still maintained on-road manners.

Your friend might be interested in the buildup I did on my 90 RRC. First no swaybars on 90 didn't start until 91, I put on a HD OME suspension and run 265 75 16s it is my daily driver and I can still do 80 on the hwy. Sucks at aceleratoin though. I did some underbody protection. The expensive thing on the old trucks most times is making them reliable. I have anywhere from 3-4 thousand dollars in new parts and labor on mine, and I did most of the work my self. Tell him to check my profile, If he likes it I will send a list of what I have done. Now the shameless plug it is forsale for $6500 with 133500 miles, time to start on the 97 disco
