I just saw this manual R380 **NO SUNROOF** ~semi-beater '95 D1 on fakebook marketplace and figured I'd drop it in here (zero relation to owner)

It's too bad they didn't replace the window gasket! With no sunroofs and a good gasket there is very little to leakage to rot the pans :-/ In any case this could be a great builder for someone.

I would avoid anything with a distributor. I think anything with a CUX engine management system is just a good candidate for a diesel conversion.
It’s CUX but anybody who worked for the company back then pronounces it sucks

I have had my (well documented) struggles with the 14CUX but really, it's pretty damned simple, insofar as ECU's are concerned. There's nothing wrong with the distributor (especially those, like the NAS, with the remote amplifier. It seems lots of GEMs folks have plenty of other problems as well. Greener grass.
I admit, I'd like to run coil-on-plug.. just because.. but with a slow rolling 3.9 I just don't know if the complexity is worth it.

As someone who also owned a D1 with a HT2.8VNT (the last, best 'version' of the 300tdi), and man, that is a GREAT engine, to say the pre-gems D1 is a donor candidate is just silly (at best).

The one that I reposted here is a super rare NAS; it is essentially the base of the Camel rig. It would be a great project for someone looking for a manual D1. I'd jump on it but i am knee deep in my remaining D1 :)
