A good search proved lacking...

My '96 5spd transfer case is caput! I need a new one and want to know the best places to shop for a new/used/rebuild... labor will be 450.00; thats reasonable. Simultaneuos repairs:

New U-joints -- is this reasonable?

Is there anything else that should be checked out while the boys are under there?

Thanks for your time!

any dI tcase will work....even automatics.........all you have to do is remove the lockout solenoid.......my 96 5 speed now has a 98 auto tbox......your labor price seems reasonable i paid 500 three years ago.....u joints not a bad idea since the shaft will be off anyway, if you want to pay the extra....

Ryan,
Where are you located? I have a transfer case out of a '96 that was working fine when it was removed this past spring. I'm in CT so shipping might be the only issue. Contact me at paulgrant@mac.com and we'll see if I can't help you out.
Thanks,
Paul

A follow up posting

I acquired a transfer case at LoneKiwi.com out of Ohio; very knowledgable, very accomodating.

Apparently, one is supposed to locate an identifier number for the transfer case. This number has a suffix "F" or "G"... my mechanics did not find any such number any where near the reasonable vincinity.

A conversation with LR-NA of Naperville revealed that the identifier is not as important as you would think. The same transfer case interchanges with the D90.

The apparent differences are in the ratios: 1.2:1 or 1.4:1, but the difference lies between the AT and MT transfer cases with the 1.2 being the ratio for the Manual version.

My replacement will be shipped and I will follow-up again if Im educated further...

Rock on!

T-Case follow up... problems?

Hey there Here is the follow up I promised, yet I need some help with this!!

The mechanic received the T-case I had shipped directly to him (which he said was in immaculate condition). The only difference in the new and mine was that the new T-case had 2 electrical 'plugs' where mine had absolutely nothing... everything matched up, so he installed the new one which fit like a glove.

On road test, everything shifted very smoothly and quietly... UNTIL you tried to shift into LOW RANGE.

It is impossible to shift into NEUTRAL or LOW RANGE....

So now what?

1. was the part correct? Other than a complete mechanical match, NO.
2. is the new one electrically actuated to allow a shift from High Range into LOW? I dont know...
3. could/should one place a modified switch to manually overide the actuator and allow me to shift into Low range...

Help please?

well some of the information you have is suspect

all NAS defender 90's had the 1.22 ratio

all Nas disco 1's also have the 1.22 ratio

the defender 110's have the 1.4 ratio

did they install the TC as a complete swap?...linkage and all?

I would bet that the shift selonoid is no good or the linkage is messed up, very rarely do these TC's have problems they are pretty bullet proof
