Hey guys!! Magna Donnelly has offered to replace my rear view mirror. However, they are having a hard time coming up with a part number? Here is a section of the email that I received from Cheryl Johnson with MD Corporation:
One other option would be for you to check with a dealer for the replacement part number for your mirror. If you send me the part number it would help narrow down the correct part.
Once I am able to obtain the correct mirror and send it to you I would like
to have you send your old mirror back to me. We evaluate the issues with
returned product to determine areas of concern for future products.

I called the dealer and they referred me back to Magna D. I have also enclosed a picture of the rear view mirror for your ready review and reference if need be. All I need is the part number for my 1998 D1 4.0L. As always thank you in advance! Melissa N

Melissa, send an email to Magna Donnelly corporation - they seemed to have a silent free-replacement program, don't know if it is still in action. Otherwise, they can sell one to you - the simplest self-dimming mirror without frills for $99, with map lights - for $199, and with map lights and compass/thermometer - for $299. Same mirrors (from Magna Donnelly) can be found in JC Whitney catalog.

Thanks Peter!! But I did send the email. About 10 weeks ago. This is the letter I got from MD. They are expensive so I hate to spend the $$$. It looks like I will need to though. That black line is driving me crazy!!!
Dear Melissa:

I am working with our overseas facility who originally produced the mirror.
We built a variety of mirrors for Land Rover and we are trying to determine
exactly which mirror is used on your Land Rover model.

Could you please check the mounting area on your mirror to determine if the
part that attaches to the button on the windshield is metal or plastic? If
it is plastic it will have a single mount option. If it is metal you will
see a metal bracket with two plastic covers attached. Since we made both
options we need to understand which option is on your vehicle.

One other option would be for you to check with a dealer for the
replacement part number for your mirror. If you send me the part number it
would help narrow down the correct part.

Once I am able to obtain the correct mirror and send it to you I would like
to have you send your old mirror back to me. We evaluate the issues with
returned product to determine areas of concern for future products.

Best regards,

Cheryl Johnson

That seems weird.. They just sent me one two months ago and the only thing that they wanted to know was whether I had map lights or not and how many pins on the connector there were. My Disco is a 98 also and it has maplights with an oval 3 pin connector. That is really all they needed to know... They also didn't want my old sent back to them either.. Mine did the same thing that yours did. Mr. Langworthy from their Holland, MI office is who I talked to.

Melissa, just do what they asked you to - send them the part number. Get it from AB/RN or other catalog if you want. They will send you a new mirror - be prepared to wait for a couple of months if you want it free.

Sorry almost forgot that they want to know what the mount is.. You should have the DML mount that same as me.. I'll try to attach the doc that they sent me to figure out what mirror I had so that they could send me the correct one.

Well, I see .doc files can't be attached so I'll see if I can turn it into a pdf.

I don't recall exactly which mount it is but just some advice, give them all the info you can. On the second Disco I had this happen on, they sent the one with the wrong mount. Took another couple of weeks to get it straight. I also don't know why I got upgraded to map lights when I didn't have them but I'm not going to complain one bit, no suh!

Steve, you got the one with the map lights because that was probably all they had to give you. The guy that I was talking to told me that they didn't have any of the non-map light versions. He told me that I was lucky that I had the map lights because he had a whole warehouse full of them and had no clue if they were even going to get any without them.

Sent you the doc via your gmail account that is listed in your profile.

Melissa, when I had ours replaced in our 97 RR I just sent Cheryl a couple of pictures (at different angles of course) so she could match the mirror up to what we had. It took two tries but I eventually got the mirror. Just a suggestion in case you can't come up with a part number for whatever reason.

Cheap Mirror

Hi Rover Chick.

I have had a similar problem as with most Rover owners. An easy and inexpensive fix for you is to call Zack at All Truck (junk Yard) in Salt Lake City, Utah 801-265-9800. Zach has several newer Disco's on hand and will be happy to ship a rear view to you for a fraction of the price. Most the Rover guys here in Salt Lake Frequent all truck and Zack always takes great care of us.

Good Luck.

Must have been the weight of too many beads that destroyed the mirror.

LOL!!! I was patiently awaiting the comment on the excessive beads ;) They are party beads no Rover should be without them.

Jake thank you much on the suggestion of Zach(and his number). If Cheryl does not come fruition then I will give him a buzzz. DWeb is great..I am so very glad that it is up again! Best, Melissa N

Hey Mark,

I was sorry you were unable to make it. It was an awsome trip we went from Capitol Reef to the Swell to Goblin Valley and everything inbetween. We did'nt see another vehicle for two days, Keith and Mike really came through with the planning I think we did about 130 miles off road. I would love to do it again so when ever you have a couple of days to kill lets go.

I'm still washing all the mud out and it's looking like a six month project.
