1998 Discovery Trailer light blinking/flashing

New to me 98 disco and working on all the issues right now. When I got the vehicle I noticed I could hear a flasher/blinker sound coming from the cluster. Pulled the cluster and found the normal suspects removed and installed the lights back in the cluster. The trailer light was removed and popped it back in and she is flashing now.

When I turn the key on it starts flashing rapidly. When I give a turn signal the signals work fine on the cluster and the trailer light flashes with them every time and slows down. Turn the signal back off and it goes to the rapid flashing again.

It does appear to have an universal trailer light harness on the rear.

The way I have read and understand is that (on a D2)(prob the same on D1) with a trailer hooked up, the "trailer light" will blink when the turn signals are used. if turn sig. not in use, no blinky. If ya got a blink'n light with no trailer hooked up, you might have an issue with your harness ie: hooked up wrong or if you have 1 of those 'light converter" adapters, if could have gone south.

This happens with the key on and signals off. Its a rapid flash when its doing that (think annoying). When you give a signal left or right it still blinks the whole time but slower and at the same pace of the normal signal flash.

It has a generic non converter 4 way flat trailer harness on it.

Ok still got this. When I remove the flasher relay it stops and signals don't work either.

The signals work fine and flash at a normal pace. The trailer wiring harness has been cut out completely. The rear bumper end caps have been removed and the lights for them have been tied up without the bulbs. Would that cause this?


I've yet to find another example of this or anything in Rave or owners manual that describes. Might try another flasher relay.

Does this 98 Disco have a standard alarm module connected?

The alarm is still intact.


I grabbed another relay from junker and the light is no longer flashing all the time.

When you give a signal the trailer light comes on once and then goes out. The signal arrow now flashes fast I'm guessing from the lights removed from the rear bumper caps that are missing. I'll throw bulbs in those and hopefully I'm good.

So to solve this I'm pretty sure the relay was bad and the symptom was a trailer light flashing rapidly all the time except when you gave a signal.
