What kind of compression should I be getting from my engine? I don't have the correct size adapter to screw my tester in so I've only been able to hold the thing on. I'm seeing 200psi from 1 and 2 and 150psi from 3 and 4 but it's hard to get the tester on those back two.
The timing belt broke and now I'm trying to determine if there was any damage done to the valves/push rods.
It broke as I was driving up a hill off road so stopped immediately and everything went dead quiet. No audible evidence of things hitting other things.
If I have bent push rods, then will the valves actually still seat OK, but won't open all the way? If so, what does that mean?

Thanks in advance.

never happened to me but i GUESS your valve clearances would be off by a bit.

i'd say pull the injectors, change the belt etc, turn it over by hand to make sure all is well, set the valve clearances, spin it up and see how it runs.

if something is noticeably wrong then you can start working from there.

I like your thinking. I've put a new belt on and I'll check the clearances. I guess my compression is off considerably as I found a website that stated the pressure for a 2.25l diesel should be around 425psi:ack:
Oh well, we'll see I guess.
Thanks.

Well it does run at 22:1...

Hmmm..... 150psi would be fine for a 2-1/4l petrol, but, for a 2-1/4l diesel, it should be up around 450psi....... I don't have a 2.5l diesel info, But I wouldn't imagine it being that far off from the 2-1/4..... the compression ratio, being up around 25 or 30 :1 instead of 7 or 8 :1, it should be a lot higher than you're seeing.....

_______

Edit:
I see some others jumped in while I was looking for the manual..... but, yeah, you've got half of what you should have.....

" I don't have the correct size adapter to screw my tester in so I've only been able to hold the thing on." get the proper size fitting. your probablly getting a lot of crompression seeping past the threads of the gauge. this will guive you a fasle reading.

I guess that's the first thing to do. The tester I have has the tapered rubber ends to seal into whichever hole you stick it in. Although at 400psi, I'm not sure i could hold it tight enough. I'll try to get an adapter and see what I get.

Thanks for your help everyone.

Update:

Found a bit of a problem. I was told the push rods are the weakest part of the valve train, designed to bend to protect valves etc. I'm hoping that's correct (see below).
I'm thinking I'll make some interesting Land Rover art out of these. :D

Damn.... but I guess it could be worse. Two still look good.... ;-)

When did Rover start using *belts* and stop using chains?

I think 3 are saved. Good for spares in case...

I'm not sure when the belts v chains were used. Not sure of the age of this motor, assuming mid-late '80's. I guess there was/is a company in U.K. who sells a chain kit for these motors to prevent this kind of thing happening.

When they went from the 2.25 diesel to the 2.5 they went to a timing belt. Zeuss used to sell a timing gear conversion though I have heard it had issues- I don't know what they were though.
