Are these worth anything? A friend of mine has a '78 2 door that he has sunk $14k into and wants to sell it I told him to stick it on E-bay he wants $10k out of it. I was thinking more like $1k but I guess I just don't appreciate the uniquity of it...or so I'm told

As long as it's 25 years old. 2008 makes the 1983 Defenders legal also...

So, in 2008, we'll be able to import 1983 defenders into the US? I did some checking and it looks like these things can be found on ebay UK for cheap! This leads me to a couple of questions.
1. Can the 1983 diesels be imported>
2. Does anyone know what the shipping cost on such an import would be?

For what it's worth, I have owned, driven, insured, passed inspection with and thoroughly enjoyed a 1985 Range Rover. It was federalized back in 1985 when it was brought into the US. It lived the bulk of it's life in VT but has been registered in CT for the last six or seven years.

Until the DOT and EPA laws changed in 1986 thanks to pressure from manufacturers like Mercedes Benz (500SL, SEC, SEL), BMW (323i, 745i), Ferrari (Boxer), Porsche (930, 935) it was not that hard to bring a car not officially available, into the US. I even owned a grey market Honda Prelude EX with ALB (Honda's version of ABS) back in 1984. The first Range Rover I was ever in was owned by someone I worked with who lived in Beverly Hills and that was back in 1985 and that truck was completely legal.

I've done some reading on imports, as far as I can tell from the original documents from the Govt., anything over 25 years is legal. But you should ask if you are planning on buying.
