2-piece Lug Nuts?

Had my tires mounted yesterday and I went to take the tires off to do some trimming and it was real tough to get the socket on them, wasn't at all before. So one is pretty hard to get off and when i finally get it off, it's rattling like the chrome part is not a solid piece. Almost like a flimsy cheap al piece. Not to mention it's beat to hell.
I can't get a new lug for a few days, but have to have my truck to move my crap down to where i'm starting my new job. if the AL-type piece comes off can you still get the lug off easily is basically my only question.
Also where's a cheap place to get new lugs?

some chrome lug nuts have a chrome cap on them that can be knocked off or loose...if this happens it still shouldn't bother the performance of the lug

Remove the deformed "chrome cap thingy" using a cut off wheel (or hack saw). Once removed it will then be able to accomodate 1" socket. I'm currently running with 3 lug nuts modified in this manner.

The chrome piece (stainless steel) on series 1 nuts is part of the nut (loose cover) It is NOT meant to be removed. A 27mm socket fits over it.
They do get marked a bit but so?

As stated above, those lug nuts are made in two pieces. There is a thin cap on the outside that is not made to come off. It is 27mm.

it's incredibly beat up...the ss is practically twisted and makes it real hard to get a 27 onto. i'm only concerned if that piece comes off can i still get the nut off easily?

i'd use the nuts from the spare but almost all of them are hard to fit the socket onto now...almost like they torqued them down too much and the ss started to warp...

The problem is that the last shop to remove your wheels (tires? alignment?) used a 1 1/8" socket on your 1 1/16" lugnuts, and that's why the caps are so messed-up. You should offer to let them pay the $400+tax that a new set of nuts costs.

Removing the damaged caps is the best way to go - you won't have any trouble removing the nuts if you pull the caps.

But if your spare nuts have a dimple on the tops, DON'T use them on the road wheels - they're made of softer metal & aren't rated for that load. Also, never put a roadwheel lugnut on the spare - the threads will be permanently damaged.

If it's replacing just one out of five, temporarily, it's shouldn't be a problem. In fact, running with one missing shouldn't be a big deal. Especially if 5 are tightened correctly on a wheel then one removed and used to make the 5 on another wheel, so they are torqued in the right pattern.
