Hello,

I have a 2004 discovery with 85k miles .. almost all the times it will NOT start in Park but almost all the times starts in neutral .. when it does not start in neutral (happened only 2-3 times) retrying after 5-10 min.. it will start in neutral...

This started happening after the battery ground wire connection to the engine came loose... re-tightened the bolt and it worked fine (that is, starting in park) until about 3 months later where the above problem started..

Has anyone encountered this problem? how was it fixed.. otherwise can anyone suggest how to diagnose the problem...

No error codes , no warning lights come on..

Any help would be appreciated.

Harry

Will not turn over or start? If it wont turn over, it'a more than likely the PRNDL switch. It's on the side of the transmission. It's a common problem across all manufactures vehicles.

Yep, sounds like the PRNDL switch, more often called the XYZ switch. It's adjustable; try adjusting it before replacing it. Search the forums - there are lots of threads about how to adjust it, plus the adjustment description in the RAVE. It can also be removed and tested before buying a replacement switch. If you do need to replace it buy used. New XYZ switches are now over $600.

$600!!!! OMG!!!!

If adjusting the XYZ switch doesn't work...
take it off,
drill out the rivets that hold it together,
clean out the old grease,
clean bad/corroded internal connections,
regrease,
seal up with bolts and nylock nuts,
reinstall loosely,
adjust while working the gears,
tighten it down,
go get muddy.

Just get a replacement from Will Tillery and swap. If so desired rebuild the first for a spare. I think I paid $50-$75 for mine at some point this year.

got a spare XYZ switch ... however when taking out the old switch, the splined selector shaft nut and part of the shaft snapped off (soaked the rusty nut for several days with WD-40 but it didnt have any effect... was fused with rust.. in retrospect should have waited longer or applied some heat from a torch..... ) ... it looks like the splined selector shaft is a replaceable part (based on the instruction of replacing the selector shaft seal ... see attached image)

Can anyone suggest a source for such a part... searched on internet but nothing comes up..
