HI, Just purchased an 05 SE3 FL at the dealer over the LR3. My wife wanted a smaller go anywhere vehicle so LR3 is off the list. Our new mechanical pet is eager to go anywhere. What do I have to watch for overall? I am a Disco1 nutcase. I have used 87 ga twice and the acceleration sounds like a high rev jap car. Can I use a midgrade like 89 or 91 for better engine performance? Please comment. K&N filter will be the next upgrade and change the muffler into a dynomax and get rid off the angled bucket size resonator to a staineless straight pipe. FL is going to be a streetrover, mall crawler mean machine. Oh I forgot to mention, I am a "rice-eating offroad nutcase". Umm, I think of Ho Chung and the rest of the rice-eating rovers.

don't waste money on higher octane- unlike the Disco, the Freelander is designed for 87 octane. Higher octane will decrease performance in an engine not designed for it.

Lots of people have done muffler mods on Freelanders- it helps a lot with rear clearance. As for the K&N- it won't make a bit of difference at all, except that it may nuke the MAF with oil which has happened to a few people. The only benefit is that in three years, if you still have the K&N it will then have justified its price.

Enjoy it- the SE3 is unique and will be collectible one day now that they are no longer made.
