Well,

Styling is a little too Mercedes for me, but...

It's based on the same platform as the Focus. It has ample horsepower and flat out gobs of torque. All wheel drive and possibly front wheel drive. It will probably have some sort of a limited slip differential in the center, and maby optional elsewhere in the driveline. Unibody, lightweight, and looking stable so far. To hell with crawling.

That thing is headed for the WRC! :D

Folks, we may finally have a winner.

Somebody needs to de-throne the manufacturer's in crowd in 4wd, and to all you 2wd snobs out there, Land Rover might be gunning for you as well, so you had better stay on that throttle. ;)

it's been pretty clear that LR is no different than the other car makers. unless they pull out miracle like getting us a real Defender, then i don't really see any hope in the near future.
the fruity tooty Freelander is just the beginning i think. the LR3 will become even MORE pussified and dumbed down just like eveything else on the market.
hopefully soon someone at the helm will steer these soon to be generic 'cars' back in the right direction.

I have to admit, if they made a Hybrid Freelander, I'd consider it for a DD.....but then again, I'm a GIRL! ;)

hybrid? oh come on now. the Freelander is already a closet homosexual........making it a hybrid would surely bring it 'out'.
i am just not a fan of the hybrids. i don't see the attraction out there when Tdi's are such a better alternative. better fuel economy, longer engine life, ease of maintenence and more efficient to produce.

save yourself the extra bucks and buy a Ford Escape Hybrid. the are cool! :D

Well, if they offered a TDi, I would take that first! But I think since Ford is going the Hybrid route, then that is a more realistic alternative.

My first 2 cars were Mercedes Diesels....300D 5cyl.....gotta love em!

Its the "dump engine" button.....cause apparently your gonna need a new one pretty soon....perhaps during the initial test drive.
Damn.....I am crying....not sure if its in laughter...or because I have a LR sitting outside with the same damn button....

Land Rover Freelander
Set for unveiling at the British Motor Show (July 06). Like the next Mondeo (2007), it'll be built on a lengthened version of the current Focus/S40/V50/Mazda 3 platform, which it will also share with the upcoming Volvo XC50 and perhaps even a Jaguar 4x4/crossover vehicle. Expect Volvo in-line five- and six-cylinder engines. LR2 badge for US market; hybrid version expected at a later date. Seven-seater option said to have been canned, though, and only five-door versions will figure

Sounds like a AWD Volvo with attitude.

Just hope its more reliable than some Volvos I know

The New Freelander In My Opinion Will Do Well. I Found A Spy Picture In The Latest Land Rover Enthusiast Magazine. The Current Models Are Not Reliable. I Am A Dealer And Bought One For Stock Last Year And Had To Return It Because It Had Bad Tranny And Many Other Issues $3000 Worth. The Truck Only Had 40's K Miles! Glad To See They Are Going To Make Some Changes. If Anyone Out There Is Looking For Late Model Rovers Drop Me A Line. I Buy Right From Land Rover Of Na. Thanks Guys.

that new Toyota FJ is going to kill the Freelander in the marketplace - 4wd Toyota version is only $22K and is actually off road capable

I hate to say it, but I'll take the FJ over the Freelander, new or old. The FJ sits on a real frame with a proven drivetrain. The FJ has a love/hate exterior with most people, but you really can't knock what's underneath it. The only real down side to it is the IFS, but other than the Wrangler, every 4x4 has that these days, and for the price Idon't even think there are any other real 4x4s other than the Wrangler SE which sucks. To each his own I guess, but I'm planning on replacing my DD with the FJ and sticking to classic Rovers as toys.

I wil say that this Freelander will probably sell better than its predecessor, but it will never be the hit that the Freelander was in Europe over here. My guess is that the LR3 will bring a better bottom line. That's my 2 cents on the topic, take it or leave it.

I think what will be more interesting is what sort of competition war the FJ sets off now in a long-dominated Jeep Wrangler monopoly, could we see a new retro Nissan Patrol on the way?

Nope; Nissan Patrols are still made (not retro), very common vehicle seen w/ UN staff throughout Europe and the Middle East. Australia too, if I'm not mistaken. Think about current the 4Runner compared to the current Land Cruiser, then picture the Pathfinder as the 4Runner equivelent... Some people I know who've spent a good bit of time in Africa said that Patrols aren't uncommon, but that they don't have the backbone that the Cruisers have, that between the chassis and the driveline, they just don't hold up as well. No firsthand knowledge, all second-hand info.... so take it for what its worth.

Didn't VW make the new bug while the old ones were still being made in Mexico? The Patrol thing was just an example, you knew what I meant. ;)
