The forest service says that the OHV trails are closed until April 1? Is this private property?

While it may not be in the same place, there is a great camp site at Mortimer that the Society used to use when we did our June Richland Gap trail rides.

CAMPGROUND NAME: Mortimer

STATE: North Carolina

REGION: Southern

RANGER DISTRICT: Grandfather

NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Lenoir

RESERVATIONS: No

DIRECTIONS:
From Lenoir, NC, take State Rt. 90 west 21 miles to a "Y" intersection.
Bear right and go 3.1 miles to campground on right.

NOTE: State Rt. 90 becomes dirt and single lane after 18.1 miles.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 1,500 ft.

The campground, stretching up a hill, has a split personality. The
campsites at the rear of campground are in an open grass
field. Campsites in the front end are tucked in among towering
hemlock, maple, and oak trees with a scattering of rhododendrons.
Thorps Creek, which can be heard throughout, runs through the campground
where some campsites overlook it. A third section, located on the
other side of creek, is comprised of all walk-in tent sites snuggled
in among huge rhododendrons.

Although once Mortimer Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp
F-5, little is left today. At the entrance to campground there is a
white maintenance building from this 1930s period. Some CCC
foundations remain behind the building.

Brown Mountain OHV is very close and there are some fire roads with some great views near by. Unfortunately, I don't know what is open.

Several folks have asked if we would consider hosting a trail ride from there again. If we do, it will be about June. It is a very gentle area for off roading , at least what is available on public land to my knowledge. It was a great place to go for gentle off-roading and beautiful campsites and vistas. We used to put in 20% trail and 80% fire roads on the trips.

It is a beautiful area.
