Naw, you'll be fine. Spare tie rod ends and steering linkage are good things to have for any trip. The stock stuff is pretty weak and bent linkage can be a trip-ender without spares.

As long as we have a good set of spares amongst the group, we'll be fine. Normally I pack spares for myself and don't worry much beyond that...but this trip is different. With so many trucks, the chance of breakage is higher so prudent planning is in order.

Right... This is what my spares consist of today:

Wheel bearings X 2
TRE?s X 2 (RH and LH)
U-joints X 2
Coolant expansion tank
Fan/ clutch
15 feet of 10 g wire
Misc wire connectors
Misc 10-30 amp fuses
30 & 40 amp relays
CSPS
Brake switch
Fuel pump
Fuel filter
All hoses
Misc lengths of 1/2 and 5/8 id hose
Valve stems
1qt PS fluid
2qt rotella
Coolant
Bearing grease
Serp belt
3/8in drive shaft bolts and nyloc nuts
Set of 5 7/16-16 socket head cap bolts (axle flanges)
OBDII reader
Fuel pressure gauge

steel-cut oats for breakfast.

Don't discount those steel-cut oats... That would be my "holy shit this is good" face...

Damn I like your list of spares. Mine is the same except for expansion tank and coolant hoses (updated already), fuel pressure gauge (permanently installed on the fuel rail), SHCS (no need for D1), and +a spare CV joint.

But you may be right - spare coolant and p/s hoses should go into the box.

Yup, I already made my shopping list. 3 cases of Natty Light and 6 bags of Doritos. I plan on foraging for natural greens if I decide I need some fiber.

All of my PS hoses/ pipes, trans cooler/ oil cooler pipes were recently rebuilt with 4000 psi stainless braided. The other hoses are also new but I carry the take-off's as spares.

Edit: No need for SHCS on DI?

I think the only places I remember seeing Allen bolts on the D1 are the intake plenum and the starter motor. Doesn't mean there aren't others, I just don't remember.
All axle-related bolts are hex cap screws (swivel housing to axle housing and brake caliper to flange - 12-points).

That's a great spares list. What do you think about alternator and/or starter? Anyone carry an extra of those? Guess it wouldn't matter, I'd be screwed since I don't have a V8 anyway.

I have a spare starter for a 3.9. Not sure if it works on the other LR motors.

Still hoping someone has a v-belt alternator spare because I don't have one.

You're right, Peter. I drilled and tapped my hubs/flanges for grade 12 7/16-16 SHCS ;)

I've never thought of a starter but have planned to carry my current alternator as a spare and upgrading to a 125 amp... Just haven't done it.

I just bought gears though so that'll have to wait.

Only spare 300tdi alt I've seen is a 65amp. I'd like to find a 100 or 125.

What gear ratio you get?

Well, I called him on Monday but haven't heard back. Dassler's an excellent mechanic so I know that the LT230 will get rebuilt correctly. I just hope that it comes back soon so I can knock out some of the projects that I have queued up.

Changed engine oil, ATF, and diff gear oil. Remembered that the rear diff's oil hasn't been changed since 2001, 110 kmi ago, and the front diff's - since 2007, about 50kmi ago. Don't remember if I ever drained the transmission pan (on this truck) before today...

Finished service on my truck this week. Noticed my fricking swivel ball leak is back....

Was thinking about you guys and HD steering and I remembered I bought a set of genuine Dan Chapman rods a while back. Need to get some new TRE's and get those rods on and get that swivel ball replaced.

Chris, any word on your truck???
