So I went and looked at the tires I'm rollin, they are 265/75 R16 Open Country MTs and have done me well for Light/Medium PNW Wheeling. They will take me where I need to go and home. Not to loud on Hwy, work great in snow and rainy conditions. Mud, etc, not to shabby.

Those things look almost identical to Cooper STT's

Yes, SInce you're an Admin I'll fell free to highjack this thread with some gratuitous "ME" Photo links

Here's some links to the CJ-8

Here's my members profile in my club from around 2007-8ish

http://www.snort4x4.com/members/mark.html

I drove the Jeep as a daily driver/ weekend wheeler for quite a while, then after 5-6 years I got a commuter so getting to work on Monday wasn't a crisis situation Sunday morning after something "made a funny sound" after the day of wheeling. That's when I met Mr. Sawzall and it was game on. I swapped out the stock 258 for an 87 5.0 EFI that I had blueprinted and balanced, Dana 60s Welded rear diff, front Detroit, 42" Iroks Beadlocks, it was bad ass. Total ownership was 15 years at least.

I got sick of the trailer queen deal though. Trailer maintenance, towing, tow rig upkeep, fuel maintenance it all adds up to PAIN IN THE ASS over time so I decided to offer up the Jeep for trade. I was open to Land Rover of course because they are bad ass out of the box. We made the trade now I have a Ready to roll Disco.

Here's some of the D1

Here's the only "wheeling" video I have of this car. It's my daily driver so I haven't been doing anything too crazy (tree trails) in it. Yet.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0OeObL1xyg

So there it is.
My rigs.

I prefer the Discovery to my Jeep due to it's better designed suspension, quite interior and durability AND I can drive it to and from the trails like I used to enjoy doing. For the D3 I like the quality and comfort when I'm sitting in my commute 45 each way every day. Mileage is averaging 15 Mpg not great but not horrible. So long as gas stays under $5-6 a gallon it'll be bearable (bearly, ha ha ha)

Mark, I wanted to see pics of your trucks only because you said you never put anything on your trucks for looks. But I must conclude, after seeing your pics, that you do. You just don't know it.

You dumped the jeep cuz it was looking like shit after all the sawzall. You even painted some flame on the hood to cover up the mess.

Look, there's nothing wrong with wanting to have a good looking truck. Why else would you take your so-called "poseur shot" picture? You thought the Disco was looking good, and you took a picture. BAM! so there, just like we all like beautiful woman, there's nothing wrong wanting to make your Disco look good. Shit, I installed a snorkel because I liked the way it looked!

now, don't tell me you don't care how your woman looks like.

I still see you have the jeeper tendency with the fat tires. You go any wider on the Disco, Mr Sawzall will come out of nowhere, and you can kiss your current Disco enjoyment goodbye.

Tires: These are the tires it came with. Why change what's working?

Regarding the sawzall. I never say never ;) but I don't have plans to add larger tires. If anything I'd go ARB up front and possible alloy axle shafts, that is if it's warranted (Read breaking axles). I don't go out wheeling on a weekly basis anymore nor do I go into the depths of the rock gardens. If the road takes me there I know what to do, but I'm not going out just to hit the "Extreme" lines. I'm more about the "expedition" ans the D1 I have as it is has got me covered. and yeah I do care what my rig looks like, I just hadn't thought so deeply about it. :victory:

Various conditions alter the pressures I'll run and where I run them, but every single number on my chart is higher than most would consider. Snow and ice pressures cannot be charted. Dangers are increased, and every condition is different. Pressures in extreme cold weather environments vary drastically depending on what I see, hear, smell and feel.

I run higher pressures than average with a tire that's sort of in the middle, so far as width is concerned.

That shows you that I value a solid grip on terrain, and a tire that will bite in and try to find solid ground, while being short enough to maintain good lateral stability and a progressive, predictable release at high pressures. Given a choice, I'll lean toward a narrower tire, a stiff sidewall, and high pressures.

The size I use is a popular size for a DII, but it's a good size. I fit different tires for expected conditions at times, but this is the default rubber.

Essentially, I go hard and narrow. Others go fat. It depends on what you do and how you do it, as well as personal preference. There is never a perfect choice. Every tire is a compromise.

Cheers,

Kennith

Dang i missed all the fun, i always come in late. so what your saying is you'll take hard and norrow over fat and not hard. Hear that whatroad be takin notes now

Why did y'all have to gay-up my thread.

But I went with 255-85 km2's, I'm glad I did. They work damn well and are amazing in deep snow. Maybe Bret will throw a picture up.

Informative thread, even around all the off topic side trips and comments. I have 245/75/16 on my D2 with no lift. Spec on these is Tire Width 9.7"| Tire Dia. 30.7 | Tread Width 7.3". When I went to these from stock tire size, it push the center of gravity up and made it feel "tippie" over stock with the short wheel base on the D2 as compared to some other vehicles.

So from what I learned from Garrett in this thread the taller tire will air down to give me more tire on the ground LONG-wise, front to back, and better traction than my stock tire size. Now that I am a little "off-balance" or "tippie" feeling, whatever you want to call it, I would think a little wider tire "footprint" would give me a more stable stance and get me closer to my original feel when driving the D2.

Fast forward to today, when I am ready for a 2" inch modest lift with OME springs and TF shocks, so I can go bigger on tires and that would benefit me off-road, great! But if moving up to the 245/75s from stock made the D2 feel "tippie" with no lift, and now with the lift and taller tires I now want to go some wider to get a better center of gravity feel, wouldn't I? At 30.7" tall now, if I were to go to 32-33" wouldn't I want to go wider from my current 9.9" tire width to 10.5 -11.5" in tire width to give me some balance? So if I were to go 255 or 265 or 275, wouldn't it help to go from 75 to 70 as long as I do not interfere with the body or other parts at whatever point would give me that tall stance and more stable wide stance at the same time, especially for on-road driving and control?

And, it is hard to post summer pics or videos you do not have, just saying!
Hahaha! The topic surrounded how his tires worked so well in the snow so the vids were relevant. Sorta anyways.
But since I'm getting called out!

Ive got 2inch HD rovertym springs and OME shocks and i dont know that i could fit 33 maybe but rubbing would come with it. and i dont have any bumpers so its a little taller than 2 inches. but i dont know for sure ive never tried stuffing some 33's at least not with my stock bumper haha.
anyone tried it. pictures are always nice too
thanks

My experience with tall vs wide (tires, not girls at the bar)

Way back I got my 2wd chevy truck stuck in a puddle in the mud. Big lifted chevy truck with 454 and 44's tried to pull me out and dug 4 trenches.
6 cyl Nissan with tall tires hooked up and pulled me right out without even stressing the truck.

I've been using 245/75r16 for the last three tire sets, and I'm happy with the size and usability.

Those videos proved that your smaller tires were superior to my larger ones ;p

I was kinda hoping for a picture of you stuck and me driving around you with snow pushing over my hood, or a picture of pissed snowmobilers yelling at us would have been fine ; )
