33's on a Rangie?

Okay, so the one I bought has the RTE 2"springs, and I need to know if 33s will wedge in there. It has the NATO steel wheels, and 32x11.5 now with no rubbing, but the guy who sold it was about to do the 2" body lift. I already have some 33x12.5 BFG Mud Terrains, and I would like to run them through the winter while I look for other tires...

First of all, I didn't know that the nato wheels came in 15". Second, that's a pretty fat and heavy tire. You really think you're going to accomplish that much more with an inch all the way around? I would suggest not going with 33's. You are at a much greater risk of breaking CV joints than you are with smaller tires. Also your truck will be that much more of a dog with larger tires without gears. It's up to you, but I don't think you will gain that much more with a wider tire.

I agree about the tires being more than I need, but the 32s on the truck now will need to go another vehicle, so the 33s would be a stop gap measure until I buy new ones, 6 months on the outside. They may not be the NATO wheels, they are black steel 15x8, with small holes in them.

33's = yum

you are buying a one way ticket to rubbistan. i ran my 33 10.5s on 3" for a one trip and effed em up. its not a stop gap measure, but a sawzall one. breakage is not an issue unless you are mean with the skinny pedal and gearing would most certainly become the #1 thing on your dear santa letter.
all that said, 33s are hot and you get more chicks.

I agree with JS. I am running 33x10.50/15 Interco TSL's on GCR rims. I cut the leading and trailing edges but have had no rubbing issues and I have a much tighter turning radius due to the GCR backspacing but go easy on those CV's........

my '88 is on the left and Matt's is on the right...I have 245/75/16's and he has 33x12.5 SSR's on stock 3 spokes...Matt and I have the same springs (OME's) but he has the SG spring spacers and an RTE BL (2")...so 3" more than me plus some cutting. His rig rubs loudly on the radius arms but no damage to the tires. I think the GCR rims would alleviate the radius arm rubbing...

We also have another '88 with 235/85/16's and on the 3 spokes and the same lift I have and they don't rub terribly...

Hope my drivel helps....

Sweet 110 in the background. I have the same color RRC as you, not a common color.

That's Jesse's 110....he flopped it in July and on the way to the VTXS run Laborday the 3.9 snapped a connecting rod and took a huge chunk out of the block and oil pan...very nasty!!

All is good though...new 4.0 is nestled within the fenders already and the flop left a few scratches and nothing more...

they are wolf wheels, not NATO. I mixed up the names. I think I can get the 33s in without mangling anything, maybe go to a 3" spring. I prefer not to go body lift, I want to see how much I can do in a low key build up at first. Maybe I will sell the 33s with the Jeep, and look for a Trxxus in a 33x10.5 down the road, beat on these 32s for a while. I have three trips planned this month, with MAR inthe middle so I should have a good idea about what will work after that.

No TrXus in that flavor currently...285/75/16, but not in the 33x10.5/15 realm IIRC...the BFG KM is available in that size though. the 32x 9.5 TSL might work for you if you avoid pavement ;)

No one has come to their senses and picked up this sweet ride. We will see MAR is close maybe someone will get the bug.

Wish I had a lil more $$ I think it would make a good rig for us up here....well sorted and I wish you luck selling it!

You will likely see Matt's RRC down at MAR along side Jesse's 110.

Chuck- i really did try to get around cutting up my junk, but the 33 x 10.5 just rubbed all over the radius arms, the front cowls (even after an initial trim) and the brace for the rear quarter panel... learn from my mistake-
either sell em and stick with 245/75, or 265s...

Or C U T-

the mess that railed new tires-
http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4287780863 - note the hole int the door aquired on the same trip- haha

the aftermath...

to cut or not to cut?

what's the story with the impulse to drill a bunch of holes in the hood of your defender?

That is something bothe Jesse and Peter did on their rigs to help keep ambient underhood temps down. Works well. Main reason is to increase anciliarry life...

thanks, but that's not the part I failt to grasp.

....I don't follow...I guess I was explaining it wasn't an impulse, it was a pretty well thought out modification.

hmmmm.
guess it depends on what you are focusing on thinking through.
i'm suggesting that regardless of what heat it might dissipate the cosmetic drawbacks would negate the advantages.

it looks awful.

Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. It's quite a common mod. around the world, to vent the Defender's hood. It's not the most 'elegant' (there's that word again) solution but it works.

I've seen worse 'cosmetic drawbacks', like huge plastic waffle makers strapped ones rack, but hey, whatever works ;)
