350 V8 into a 1993 RRC LWB?

My 1993 is pretty original, other than having been converted to coils and the ugly color matched wheels were swapped. I love the truck, everything works great even with 196K miles. There isn't any rust.

I recently had it overheat pretty badly, and even after replacing the head gaskets its leaking coolant into the oil. Its become very hard to start and runs like crap. DUH. I don't know if a liner slipped or not, but I'm kind of thinking about swapping a 350 TBI engine into it. The transmission was rebuilt at one time. I also have a locking LT230 I'll put in it to replace the BW transfer-case.

I was thinking about keeping the transmission and LT230 since I would not have to mess up the interior. I don't want a bunch of ugly looking shifters sticking out from all over the place.

What are your thoughts?

I'm going to dress up the 350 and add a cam to it. its out of a 1994 Chevy Van with about 150K miles on it. Its pretty clean, it needs new gaskets, but that is easy enough.

Fuck the "venerable 350."
What you want is a 5.3L Gen IV Vortec with 6L80E behind it, in front of LT230.
Go to D90 forum, Nick Markiw here in San Diego makes this conversion - now available for an RRC as well.

funny you should say that. I just made a trade for a Disco 2 for the 350 V8.

So, I'll be on the look out for a 5.3L:rofl:

I've seen some 4.6 blocks from P38 Rangies dropped into the RRC. That increases your performance (although not by as much as other options) and also mates up perfectly to the ZF so your levers all stay untouched. Also, 4.6 blocks are readily available, I think Marty (drillbit) has some.

Your driver's footwell area looks damp. Have you checked under the carpet recently?

Just pulled a 4.5L Dakar block out of an '88 RR yesterday. Hopefully I'll have the LS3 sitting in it next week. Ridiculously expensive package, but thats what the customer wants so...

What's the first thing you think he breaks? I say the short front axle. Maybe the input shaft on the trans.

My 94 RRC LWB has a RPI 4.6 and has served me well over the years. Direct fit and easily maintained with readily accessible LR parts. Buy a short block and take the serviceable bits from your current engine.

Its not wet. I need to clean the carpets in the front. They are just dirty. It was sitting in a barn for about 9 years before I bought it. Nothing was leaking other than the steering box. I got that to stop. Then the engine decided to start mixing coolant and oil, milkshake machine

Nick's D90 is a truely inspired piece of engineering.
Finished a healthy amount of Macallan round the camp fire at the Western LR Rally in Sedona.

well, I picked up a Diesel. I'll have an adapter made for it. I have a friend in Chicago sending me the pattern for the conversion plate. I just need to unbolt the transmission from the engine, and pull the 4.2L out.

The OM617 diesel won't work or it won't work well. The bulkhead overhang will block the filter housing access, the front sump oil pan will interfere with the diff and the timing cover/injector pump will interfere with a LHD PS unit. That's just for starters...

5.3/4.8 Vortec, i need someone to figure this out and figure out how to retain the function of the factory instrument cluster and shifter/console. i used to be diehard aluminum 215 but they really are junk along with the 14cux engine mangement

jeebus.....I hope someone gave you that diesel or paid you to haul it away because as ezzzz said above you will have a lot of fabrication work just to make it fit.

And for what?

An old, slow diesel?

At least my 300tdi was a relatively quick swap for all the awesome power...(I do get 25mpg occasionally)

I vote for the L33 Vortec 5.3l V8. Aluminum version of the LM7. Found in:

2005–2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD
2005–2007 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD

The Vortec 5300 L33 (VIN code "B") is an aluminum block version of the LM7, and was referred to as the Vortec 5300 HO in marketing materials. However it should be noted that the L33 uses a flat top piston from the 4.8L instead of the standard dish piston found in the LM7. It also uses 799 cylinder heads, which are identical to the 243 casting found on the LS6 and LS2 with the exception to the Corvette spec valve springs, and hollow stem exhaust valves on the 2002-2004 LS6. This combination increased the compression from 9.5:1 to 10.0:1. Also the L33 had a specific camshaft not shared with any other engine, with lobe lift of 7.2 mm, 193 degrees of intake and exhaust duration, and a 116 degree lobe separation angle. As a result, power increased by 15 hp (11 kW), to 310 hp (230 kW) and 335 lb·ft (441 N·m). It was only available on extended cab 4WD pickup trucks. Only 25% of trucks made in 2005 had the L33 engine.

Nick Markiw has already figured it all out (D1/D90/RRC - don't know if he did anything for a D2).
