So it’s time for tires. Currently I’m on puny 265 k02s. I am considering 255/85/16 or 285/75/16s. My latest wheeling trip has got me thinking about 35s. It seems every newbie jeeper and bronco has 37s and thrashes the trails, making it harder for my lil tires. Truck currently has a 4.5 lift rte lift with extended shock towers and shocks. I will be locking the truck this year and re-gearing. What “real” world experience y’all have? As far as trimming, I have not trimmed anything. How much trimming do I need? I currently like that I can

I tried d2 flares and they weren't enough so did the flexiflare things

on the bumpstop

37s on 4” lift. A LOT of cutting. My buddy is looking to lift and build his new truck. He wants 35-37 inch tires. I told him not to do it. It’s honestly not worth the effort. You lose a lot of drivability for minimal gains off-road. I honestly enjoyed my truck the most with a 3” lift and 33s.

Im on 4.5 RTE coils. 11" fox shocks. 35x12.50-15s. At first I thought I cut too much, but when its fully stuffed its just enough clearance. Im only running about 4" of up travel.

Don here trail leader for the SoCal and San Diego Land ROver Clubs. I'm running 3" lift on 33's and have gone through some of the toughest trails SoCal has to offer. When you go 4" + with larger tires you increase the chance for roll over in those off camber situations when you really don't need that pucker moment :)

255/85 can fit with minimal to no cutting if you keep the offset close to stock (natos maybe?) and perhaps use longer trailing arms. That’s just over 33”. Maybe do a search for that size. It’s been mentioned a few times. Flexi flares will likely be needed for 285s. We have them on our D1 with 8” and very offset rims and it just fits with flares. No body lift and only slightly longer bump stops.
For gearing we just used a 1.4 t box with stock gears and it works great on road but low is unchanged so it’s a bit higher than stock. Plan on HD axles, cvs, and lockers as well, all of which are needed on pretty much any wheeling rover, but for sure on 33s.

You can do 35’s fairly cleanly with some modest trimming. You’ll have to limit up travel though. Maybe less if you have 4.5” of lift though. I went from 265/75 to 315/75’s and it was a pretty good jump in capability.

33's on my 2004 D2 were the perfect setup in my opinion. 285/75/16. Took me pretty much everywhere I wanted to go, and a lot of places I didn't want to go. Just a very minor nip & tuck to fit with OME HD springs & shocks (about 2.5-3" lift if I recall correctly).

Guys he's talking about a D2. D1 advice does not pertain.
He's not going to have to do any cutting to get 33s to fit.
With the lift he has on his D2 255 and 285s will run fine with out rubbing although 285s will rub the radius arms.
I'm running 35" tires on a similar layout and the only trimming I did was to the plastic sill on the rockers.
If you have or plan to get rock sliders, they may have to be cut a little short.

I do have rock sliders and it does look like the front of the rock slider behind the front tire might make contact

I have 35s on my D2 with 3in Rte lift with 1in spacer blocks making the lift effectively 4 in. I have a metal front bumper and In the front, I needed to trim a bit of the fender closest to the door.

in the rear I have a tactical rovers rear bumper which removed a lot of the rear fender and still had to do some trimming in the rear.

I also had to trim a part of the slider next to the front tire as the slider was contacting the tire during fill

Nice. I bought those same wheels. Just need rubber for them. I have a tjm front bumper and need to see if it would clear. Unfortunately I have a cheap basic bitch rear lucky bumper that doesn’t help with clearance or departure. Are u running wheel spacers? @ boosted

I wouldn’t do the spacers. That way your tires stay inside the wheel well during articulation
As is with a 4.5 lift my 265/16 rub the radius arms. I have the adrenaline 6 degree arms and they have a bulge. Kind a like my pants. Just playing. I was thinking of maybe running like a 1 inch spacers but not sure if discos play nice with spacers.

those method wheels are effectively the same as having spacers. they poke out further than stock. I installed 30mm wheel spacers today. nice little difference with it. these are 275/65/18 or 32" on a 2" RTE lift, so not the same as you, but shows it sticking out further, which you'll definitely need for 35s. Even skinny 33s rub the radius arms on stock wheels and no spacers for reference. you can adjust steering stops on each knuckle as well to limit rub if it still contacts, but you lose turning radius doing that. I'd mount up those methods with 35s first and see if you need spacers. FCP euro has spacers for $125 or so, but I think you'll be fine with the new wheels alone.

I finally installed 35s. Momma we made it!! Followed by, momma u were right!!! Lol. For those of you that trimmed the back door, what did you use to seal the inside of the door? Window urethane? Also I have less than 10k miles old man emu steering stabilizer. Doesn’t seem to be adequate. What other options are available for steering stabilizers. So far it appears trimming might be minimal. Mainly rock sliders and front fenders. The rear fenders will need a booty tuck but hopefully that’s it
