I need to swap my 3rd member, which has a Detroit locker, to my D90. The problem is, I can't remove the "pinion centralizing peg" that covers the bolt that holds the flange. Does anyone know how I can remove it without the special LR tool?

Thanks,

Javier

or undo one of the 8mm bolts from your transfer case frame mount
and stack a couple of sockets over the pin
and screw the bolt into the pin through the sockets
and out it pops :D

I like Marcs method but I'd add a bit of heat...these things are gooed up pretty good with locktite, the heat breaks that bond.

add a tap with a hammer when it hot and under tension and it will pop right out

Sawzall, that's a bit extreme :)

Thanks, guys for the tips. I'm going to try Marc's suggestion. If that fails, I'm sure a slide hammer will do the trick.

I was quoted $300 plus parts & oil to do this. I'm selling the rig for $1800. It didn't make sense to pay that just to remove that damn peg.

Thanks again, fellas.

In liue of removing a transfer case mount, I bought a couple of 8mm bolts of varying lengths. The first stripped the head, the second bolt broke and the third was stripped of its threads. Word to the wise, use hardened 8mm bolts. Also, I found a 2" to 1/2" pipe reducer. Next attempt will be with hardened bolts, if not, the slide hammer.

i had one of those pegs once that: the slide hammer (a very beefy one), socket trick, heat and some other tricks would not remove it.....finally had to sawzaw it off!

IF I can get the Detroit locker out, you get a running Disco that's ripe for a build up. Or make it a parts truck and make the purchase price many times over.

If I can't get the Detroit locker out, you pay an additional $600 and you've got OME HD, MudTerrains, SS braided oil cooler lines, new PSteering lines, new lifters, injectors. Even at $2400, it's a steal.

Sshhh, with all the money I've spent on it, I really feel I should keep it a few more years. But my wife begs to differ.

Most of the accessories listed on the latter page have been removed, including the HD half shafts.

Except for the OME HD setup, BFG MTs & Detroit locker, it's pretty stock.
