Coming soon: a complete 4.0 and R380 out of my 1998 disco. The motor is original to my truck and has 200k miles. It runs well but has some top end noise when hot (It has not gotten noticeably worse in the last ~50k miles; I can take a video for interested folks). Head gaskets were done about 30k miles ago. The trans came out of a 1995 disco and has around 175k miles. The clutch was replaced about 20k miles ago and feels good. It shifts through all gears well, but it does prefer a slower shift going from first into second. Miscellaneous parts will be included, including newish aftermarket cats and y-pipe, and a box of odd and end RV8 parts (plugs, wires, gaskets, etc.). Note the transfer case is not included, nor are the clutch hydraulics & pedal assembly.

I am converting my truck to a 300Tdi and expect to have the 4.0 and R380 pulled this month. PM me if you are interested. Located in Silver Spring, MD just north of DC. I'm looking to get $1k. I am willing to separate the engine and trans, but the GEMS flywheel stays with the trans.

Still an R380. I have one that is specific to the disco/TDI combination, which I believe comes down to the length and diameter of the input shaft.

I have been told the v8 R380 can be used with TDI engine if you swap over the bellhousing assembly from a TDI R380 but you need a custom pilot bushing. One of the input shafts is thicker at the end. I looked into it when I was planning my 300tdi swap but I didnt have a v8 R380 so just decided to purchase a rebuilt TDI R380 from a supplier in the UK. So, I never confirmed it. I do, however, have a bellhousing adapter plate that allows you to mate the V8 bellhousing to the TDI engine. I now wish I hadn’t purchased it as all it does is collect dust on a shelf. I have no plans to do another TDI conversion. One is enough.

I sure like that crossbolted design.
So, the crank flange is different on the GEMS from the 14CUX? I thought they were the same! Good to know.

As far as I know they are the same on GEMS and 14CUX. The V8 R380 that was bolted to my GEMS 4.0 came out of a 14CUX truck. There were no compatibility issues, other than needing the trigger ring flywheel.

No crossmember available, I'm still using it with the 300 TDI setup.

Anyone have any experience shipping a transmission cross country for a reasonable price? Any recommended carriers?

I just used these guys to ship a front winch bumper from MO to CA. I had access to a forklift. It was super easy and arrived pretty quickly.

Bump! Make me an offer. These are just taking space in my shop now. Also included or available separately for trade-for-beer pickup: D1 V8 radiator (original and fine condition), Delphi fuel pump from 2020 (perfect), evap cannister, fuel solenoid.
