I have a question for you 5-spd gurus...

I was at a local shop the other day here in Maine and they have a '95 manual sitting there under the snow. Asked about it and they said it came in for a tranny last fall and the owner started to have them fix it then stalled.

'Main shaft is scored' is what they said. It also needed a new transfer case (came in with 0 oil) - they picked up a 'good used' one, which is sitting in the back now.

It has the typical rust in it, and the interior isn't very nice. I'd be just buying it for a toy, though, so interior doesn't matter much to me. And I'm handy with Tiger Hair...

I talked to the owner and he said all he wants is for me to split his bill with the repair shop...so that means I could get it for about $700.

If I were to get it, I'd probably putz around on it myself - I've pulled motors, etc before on old english cars - could I do a tranny on this myself? Or are there 50 special tools needed?

Is it even worth the $700?

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but figure all the 5-spd owners in the US are right here on this thread :D

Thanks!

Pat

Mudhen, for 700 bucks i'd say get it. If its going to be a trail rig or project you have lots of time to look for good deals on parts.

I, too, have been contemplating a 5spd DI for offroad use. There is one for sale about an hour from me - a '96 for 3500 or something like that. I'll have to see if I have enough money left over after the series. Great thread btw.

red line it regardless.. my 2nd has no issue. for $700 how could you go wrong? even if you tire of it, you can part it for twice that. ive yet to pull my gearbox out, so im not entirely sure whats involved in it, but from when i spent my days in a rover dealer, i dont seem to recall there being any special tools needed. its pretty simple stuff.

The shaft 'scoring' may be due to the lack of lubrication on the mainshaft. This was a well-known problem in the early days of the R-380 that was later fixed with a service campaign that included a new, "cross-drilled" mainshaft. Apparently, the cross-drilling allowed more oil to get to wherever it was needed.

i love my 5sp. one bad thing about it was that the gearbox crapped out on me. somehow the shaft in the gear box broke :ack: . don't know how or why but got it fix.

What shaft? I lost the fifth-reverse layshaft under benign conditions. Straight, level running down I-95 with the cruise on. Ironically, it was adjacent to Land Rovers import yard near Baltimore. Fractured as clean as you could slice it with a plasma torch.

One of these days I'll rebuild it for a spare.

Just thought I'd throw this out there.

I'm contemplating getting rid of my '96 D1 5-speed- it's a salvage title and needs emission work to pass, but it runs like a champ and I have all of the parts for complete restoration. 127k, transmission seems fine. Long story, but front right damage was incurred and State Farm totalled it, even though it was repairable. I bought it back from them and have enjoyed driving it around this past winter on occasion. I love how it handles, but don't have time (or ex-husband) to help work on it anymore. Altai Silver, grey leather. OME HD coils & shocks, QT front & rear protection, front sway disconnect, rear sway removed, OME HD steering dampener. I love this truck with all my heart- it has been so good to me. It was featured in LRM for a training session I took with Bill Burke that was sponsored by my club. This has been used offroad, I was a trail leader for Solihull Society but since I divorced I haven't been rovering as much...it sadly has fallen down the list of priorities right now. I will always be a Rover fan, especially a 5-speed Rover fan. I think I just want to start over.

Any reasonable offer will be considered, however, I will not part it out. I wish to get rid of the whole thing as a package AS IS. I'm in Longmont, CO. PM me for your inquiry, then I can send pics, too. I'm strapped for time, but if I get some interest, I may post a real listing on the appropriate forum.
