5 - speed transmission oil cooler?

i purchased my D1 automatic specifically to convert to 5 speed and 300tdi. When I removed the V8 and automatic I also removed the trans oil cooler lines and I had no expectation it would be something a manual gearbox needed. i installed the 5-speed without the oil cooler as it didn’t didnt seem to have an obvious provision for the oil cooler lines. I had no idea the oiler cooler was even used with 5 speed models. Also, I had never seen in person a factory equipped 5 speed D1. Well, I purchased a 5 speed D1 for parts recently and was surprised to see the oil cooler and lines.

So, I have a few questions. Did ROW 5 speed 300tdi D1s come with trans oil coolers?

Does anyone think it is a good idea to pull the lines and cooler from the parts D1 I have and take a look at installing it in my D1 with 5 speed / 300TDI?

Is it really necessary cool to manual gearbox oil! Frankly, it kind of seems like overkill and in some ways counterproductive. All of my old british cars don’t shift well at all until the oil is warmed up.

The cooler is the same as the auto trans cooler. It doesnt use the radiator though.
I think theres a thermostat in the factory cooler adapter. Ashcroft skips that

new lines are available. I bought some last year

I guess it depends on how you are going to use it. A lot of manual cars don't get trans coolers because the transmissions won't be under any real stress. Race cars, on the other hand, do get coolers. If you are going to tow or go off-road, I'd recommend a cooler. Ultimately, no matter how yoiu use it, a coolerr will extend the life of your trans, anf FWIW, these are trucks, not cars. A lot more heft for that trans to push around. Just my 2c.

Are we talking about an R380? Knowing what hardware is being discussed ("5-speed" is not specific enough) would be a good first step.

FYI we'll be introducing a drop in R380 cooler kit(cooler, lines, machined adapter for the 380) soon. Not going to be super cheap but it'll be a great addition for heavier rovers or if you tow. It'll be drop in for Defenders but be able to be fitted to Discos as well

R380 - rebuilt, shifts perfectly and quiet as it should be. Don’t know who rebuilt it as it came with a Land Rover Import “kit” sent from the UK. I am very confident it was not Duncan at Land Rover import who rebuilt it. He did rebuild the engine and that is how I know he did not rebuild the gearbox. It is wishful thinking, but I hope he sourced it from Ashcroft.

This D1 goes regularly up and down a mountain with 4000 feet in elevation change. Only occasional and mild off roading. It’s too wimpy to pull more than a small utility trailer.

i imagine I will install the cooler since I already have everything needed as long as the gearbox has the ports. I’m guessing it has plugs in the ports. Next time I’m under it I will see. I just don’t recall seeing them when I installed it.

Where did you get the lines and do you have the part numbers to share?

Yours won't have the ports. You'll need to remove FTC2104 and throw it in the trash, then install FTC2687

Does that mean D1s that came with R380 and 300tdi didn’t have oil coolers from the factory?

I dont think anything sold in the UK had coolers, gas or diesel.

Probably only countries with fast highways, which likely rules out any that got 300tdis

Considering the $700 cost of the Model #: FTC2687 adapter, my rust bucket D1 R380 parts truck just became more valuable to me.

Its decided, I may not need it, but I’m installing the oil cooler.

Thanks for all the knowledgeable input to all!

No D1's did have a cooler. UK or ROW. Only D2' with Td5 or V8 engines are equipped with. And some of them didn't.
As they aren't automatic gearboxes don't include some engine outlast burning periods and heat is not a great trouble.
My 98 300TDI is now 300.000km old, i did a complete clutch-R380-LT230 inspection and everything was as new. It worked without cooler. The best recomm from Land Rover was original gearbox oil spec change: instead original dexron ATF we all use MTF94 and yes, cool temp shifting is not the best for these old british cars, as terry1jm has written.
