I lost a hose on the AC last week. My old compressor also seemed to be leaking out of the front seal a bit. I picked up a good compressor from Will a while back so that will be going on and have a local shop to make a new hose for me. Other than a new Drier is there anything else I should replace while I have the system apart?

since it's 21 years old, check all the hoses well. Also might be worth flushing the system, replacing o-rings and possibly the pressure sensor(s) near the dryer. Was it blowing cold prior to the hose blowing?

I think chad mentioned it was cheap to have AAPAK rebuild his hoses, so if there's a place like that locally (maybe even a NAPA), you might want to replace all the hoses. I know from experience it sucks when you cheap out on a repair and have to redo it. My TXV valve under the dash is shot, and I had the chance to replace it when I had the system apart, but didn't. :(

I'm approaching 1 yr ownership of this Rover. Last summer on high it would keep you from breaking a sweat September on. This year it got weaker as it got hotter. Had a can of R12 added and it would cool pretty good. Not so great if you were in the back seat, but it's not supposed to be that great of an AC right? The guy at the shop that is making the hoses said he wouldn't mess with any of the other hoses if they were not leaking....but I'm more inclined to replace everything I can as it's going to be ~ $100 worth of R12 to recharge the system once it's apart.

Ok, selling the Suburban today. For the short term the 88 will be my daily driver...really it was before, just had the option of the suburban if I needed it. That's really the main reason we're selling the suburban. Great ride, just wasn't worth the payments to sit in the driveway.

Anyway humid 100+ heat index days and no A/C don't mix. Thankfully I only have ~ 5 minute commutes till I get the A/C fixed.

I've got a local shop making a replacement hose, a new dryer on order, and a good compressor to go on. While working mine was leaking out of the front seal.

Is there anything I need to replace while I have it apart?

Can I rip the old stuff off and just leave the system open and still drive it for a day or two till all the parts are on and I get it recharged?

Id wait till you have all of it and then repl it all and get it filled right away..... because if you install the dryer and not fill the system it will go bad if open to the atmosphere......are you doing and conversion to r134a at the same time?

I know the dryer only has about a 15 min life open to the atmosphere, so I'm right with you there. Not really too much to swap out, so it should be pretty easy install wise.

I'm sticking with R12. Overall the system is pretty weak especially for those in the back seats. From everything I've read the R134a doesn't cool as well and is more prone to leak out of old systems. The convenience factor would be a plus, but we have licensed people @ work that I trade off computer support for so it's not that big of a deal to find someone to charge the system.
