Mt 1993 4.2 Classic is smelling like fuel when I fill it up and on occasion when driving. This started after my wife was rearended by a Durango (totaled) but it only appeared to have damaged my bumper and tailgate. It is also stalling when driving. I can usually pull over let it sit for a minute and it starts up and drives like nothing happened. I have done a complete tune up cap rotor wires plugs air filter and fuel filter. I have checked my rave CD and have yet to come up with any ideas. any help would be great. thanks.

do you have a strong vacuum when you pull the gas cap off? Since you were rear-ended I'm putting money on the smog fuel vapor system having been damaged as well. Maybe just a crimped line. Next time it stalls, pull the gas cap and try to restart it.

I would check the filler neck and the lines that run up to the fuel rail. The lines are small and thin as is, I would seriously think these could have been pushed and bent when smacked in the rear. If you smell fuel and got hit in the rear, I'd drop the tank and make sure it is all in place. If it stalls when driving this sounds like a loss in fuel pressure which would coincide with leaky lines. You don't want a fire; don't pass 'GO' and pull that tank this weekend. When you smell the fuel pull over right away and see exactly where the smell is coming from.

+2 on RETROV,

smells of fuel = Fire (very good chance of in any case)

I would make sure that all of the fuel components are checked from fuel tank to injector. Do not mess with this it will bite you back.

So I dug up this thread looking for some advice.

My 95 LWB is leaking fuel from the tank--seems only at fill up. Will take this to the shop tomorrow first thing. I've noticed the smell a few times before, but I usually fill up in NJ where it is all full-service and I have never noticed the leak before. Only a faint smell of gas at the first stop after the fill up.

No real decrease in fuel economy, so it seems to be just a drip. I've been closely monitoring my fuel consumption since I just had the 4.6 engine dropped in less than 1k miles ago. Have actually not noticed a substantive difference in consumption.

Today I put in 6 gallons in NYC ($4.19 a gallon!!!) myself and watched drip, drip, drip, down under the mudflap.

My mechanic is totally on top of things, I know he'll know what it is when he sees the truck tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone is online today that knows of a known issue.

The truck has never been hit, frame is fine, had the fuel tank replaced with the recall when the recall was first issued...

The one problem with full service. Even if it was leaking, they really could care less about telling you about it. If it's leaking just during filling, check the fillter neck and hose.

mine stinks like fuel after a fillup - 1990 rrc btw - and sometimes after driving. I pulled the floor, tightened everything up, which it needed, and now it smells only by the RH rear quarter panel. Havent pulled it yet, but I know something's not bueno with that evap canister thing or its connections to the neck.

I had a leak on my 92, only after a fill-up. It turned out to be leaking grommets where the evaporative system vent hoses are attached to the fuel tank. I first tried to re-seal the grommet but that didn't last long. I ended up replacing the entire assembly, which cured the leak. The leak WILL get worse with time, so don't delay this too long.

Same for mine. It'd drip out of the rear right-hand side of the tank when full and being sloshed or when parked on steep angles. Without dropping the tank I was able to brush off the area arond the grommet and slather it with form-a-gasket. Three months and no leaking yet.
