have a 1994 Disco that is spitting too many hydrocarbons. I am 3X over what the state of IL allows. The car is tuned up, the cats and O2's have been replaced, the injectors have been replaced. Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks

Under round disk cover on rear side of Air flow meter (MFI) is an allen key. This can be carefully adj to lower idle CO.
At least on non cat Aussie Discos

How is your compression, burned valves? How about your plug wires, how old are they?

Change oil, clean stepper motor, REPLACE EVAP HOSES

Should be all hunky dory

I usually get super low readings on all my trucks

Oil going by the rings or valve guides will cause extremely high HCs.

Which evaporator hoses? Wires are new, stepper motor has been cleaned, base idle was adjusted, does not burn oil that I know of. I have not checked the compression. We are not looing for a little problem my truck puts out 3 times the hydrocarbons it needs to pass.

high HC

leigh, check resistance of the TPS for smooth readings from idle to full throttle. What's your fault codes? If you slot the TPS screw holes you can adjust for F/A ratio by the voltage signal to the ECU. I've done this but i have a smog machine and adjusted accordingly. Is the ECU getting the O2 sensor signal? You may be running on "limp mode" and can damage the cats again. Sorry i can't help you, draaronr stated i'm "an idiot".

I did the timing so that is not the issue. Beemer I may need a little more info on what you would have me do. I do not have a code reader the engine light did come on but I believe it was the 120k emission besides that is not throwing any codes. Last time I had to take it in for emissions I could not find the problem, took it to the dealer and they said there was nothing wrong with the truck even though the emissions people told me otherwise. I don't think the dealer can think for themselves if the code does not tell them something is bad then everything must be fine. "Beemer" (do you own a bimmer) could you dumb down your post for me

Fault codes, TPS checks

Leigh, yes i have nine bikes, 4 BMW's (R-27, R75/5,R90/6, R90s) Nortons with break in decals still on, Matchless 600 thumper, few International Show Winners. Nuff about me. Go to;
http://www.lrfaq.org/Disco/FAQ.Disco.Engines.FaultCodes.html This will get you started at clearing the display. With the throttle position sensor disconnected use a digital meter and check the resistance scale by opening the throttle from idle to full with engine off, it should be a smooth transition. A Process of elimination. You may have more fault codes as you eliminate each one repeating steps 1 to 4. Connect the TPS the three wires are Brown, Green(+), Blue(--) and connect you meter on voltage scale, ignition on engine off,you should read less than .30 volt at idle position. On the air mass meter under the rubber boot the blue/brown trace wire= minus, red/black trace=positive. A meter reading of 1.50 to 1.95 volts. On the side of the mass meter is a screw to adjust. Your in the dark unless you adjust the mass meter without a smog machine. You want to change or adjust one item at a time. Is the vacuum hose and fittings tight? Vacuum diaphram holding vacuum? Centrifugal advance working smooth? Set your timing at minimum degrees (4) for smog test, later run 8-11 degrees. This system is easy compared to the 96 up motors. service light, black box

Leigh, the service light, not check engine light is controlled by a box on the right passenger side panel area (been told). It's a small black box with a red label in the center, under this label and inside the box is two metal prongs that you short across with wire or nail, this resets service light. This is here say from a dealer mechanic, i'm waiting for mine to go on.
Hope this helped, Carl. .........................................................o&o>......................

The hoses on the valve cover to the intake manifold. Most common emmission failure around here.

Not 100% sure on a 94 if they are big ones or the little ones. PCV gets clogged (as the hose collapses) it will increase HCs. BTW 3x limit is still a small problem.

Also test the truck when it is HOT.

Ron and all,

I keep reading with the fault codes sentences such as: "Refer to test 13 of the continuity test procedure". What tests are these and where are they described? A lot of diagnostic codes have similar.
