95 RRC LWB - Transmission Hesitation

So my LWB has started to have a slight hesitation in the transmission in the mornings and when it is colder. Basically stays stuck in first gear until it finally shifts. On occasion, this has taken more than 2-3 minutes, running very high RPMs. Doesn't seem to matter if I start the truck and let it warm up. Basically need to get in and drive. I've taken to driving around the neighborhood for a few minutes, probably scaring the neighbors with the motor screaming, until it shifts. Then head out on the main roads. Obviously a sign of things to come, but is there anything I can do now to stave off the inevitable R&R of the transmission? Or just start saving pennies and plan to replace as soon as possible?

Hmmm... adjust the kickdown cable?

I've done this a lot on my Tdi LWB and it changes the shift point greatly.

Thanks guys. Checked fluid last weekend and level seemed good. Though it was not completely flat ground. In the garage now and I will reconfirm level.

For the kick down cable, I would imagine since it shifts normally when warmed up, that it would not be that.

If the fluid level checks fine, will do fluid drain and filter replace and see how it goes. If no change, saving for transmission.

Check fluid warmed up, in Neutral, level ground. If you have to add, do it slowly.
If the fluid level is ok, then its trash in the governor. Multiple drain and refills may be needed, or it may be too late.

I would also make sure the kickdown cable isn't melted, cracked, crimped. My cable was trashed from age and heat and caused similar problems.

been awhile since being back on here. after family, holidays, stripped bolt hole in the pan, finally finished this. It "seems" to have helped. It does still have a slight hesitation to shift when cold, but I am starting this in much colder weather now and the hesitation is much less. Just a couple seconds up the block and I am good. So we will see how long it lasts.
