You guys have always come through with the tough ones in the past, so let's get this one figured out. :patriot:

So driving home from work in a new beater D1 I bought, with the AC on, the engine just dies while driving in traffic. Waited 3 or 4 minutes and it starts up runs for 3 or 4 minutes at idle (with AC on) and dies again.

I can tell that right before it dies the fuel pump turns off. It has been making a whine noise so I hear it shut down. When the pump stops the engine dies within a few seconds. The coolant temp is right where it should be.

I think right away it's the pump right?

I get it home put the pressure gauge on it and a solid 32. Of course I couldn't get the under hood temps up again in the cool of the evening. Now I can't make it fail, I guess it's just not hot enough under there.

It drove fine in 80 degree weather for 120 miles no stutters just a couple days ago.

I don't mind buying parts and putting in the time, I just want everones opinon on what the hell is causing this.

Going straight for a new pump is terrible advice. I would do some more low cost troubleshooting before going straight to the pump.

What's the pressure at the rail?

Have you changed/ inspected:

Fuel filter
IACV
MAF
Etc?

My truck was randomly dying about a month ago. I found it was a dirty IACV. Cleaned it and no problems, stutter or dying since.

Thanks for all the advice on this one. The fuel filter was changed and the MAF was cleaned. (those were the cheapest) the fuel pump was pushing 30+ psi at the rail but with that noise it will need to go soon.

The Radiator was swapped out with a known good one out my rebuild project D1. After that it ran cool as a cucumber and still stumbled and died. The problen acted just like a vapor lock on the carb setups.

So I thought I should dive in and change out the one thing I didn't want to do. The crank position sensor. (ckps for search results) What a bitch that was. Holy shit, the previous douche cannon must have found the most incompetent shop to do his work on so many things on this truck but this one takes the cake.

The ape that put this thing in cut up part of the heat shield (I'm guessing lazy or stupid) and then he torqued those little rusty bolts to the point of failure. Needless to say by the time I got to it the head of the bolt just fell off cleaning off the dirt!

Well once that was all put back together (I did have to use safety wire to hold the sensor onto the spacer because I couldn't get the bolt stump out) it ran great. The next day I was in hot, afternoon traffic with the AC on high and no issues.

The good news is now this 900 dollar bucket of shit runs really smooth.
