My power steering pump is making terrible noises when first started, it will quite down after awhile. I guess it is on it's last leg, is it possible to rebuild these units or do you just get another one? thx, Ron

how is the fluid level?

Thats my question too, it could simply be low or have gotten low and developed some air bubbles in the system.

thx, that's a good call about air in the system, it was low awhile back, but I topped it off and have been keeping an eye on it, but maybe it sucked in some air. I will try and find the bleeder valve and give that a try, thx again. Ron

Check fluid level. if needed, add fluid. Alot of folks think it's "snake oil" but I use "No Leak" for amber leaks ps fluid successfully in all my vehicles. Recently my daughter's car lost a ps hose & I replaced it. After replacement of 1 hose, I found a leak in another. Made a roadside repair w/hose clamp & piece of rubber to get home, but the pump was making alot of noise. I added more fluid, noise didn't stop. Parked car, let sit about 2 months. Bought new car for daughter. I went to move her old car last week, battery was dead. Opened hood to jump start & checked ps fluid level. A little low, so I added some & started car. No noise & works great, too! Maybe the air escaped on its own? I don't know, but took 30 mi. drive to check, no fluid loss. Thank You, LRW.

thx, everybody!! I bled the system and ran about a quart of mobil1 atf through it to flush it out. Took it to work and after about 10 miles the noise went away. Hey, Melissa, I looked into autozone and the part number is 5380 or 5280 I think, for my '96 it kept saying 3.9 engine, so I went up to a '98 4.0 and it is the same number. thx, again all. Ron
