96 D1 shifting question

My 96 D1 is not downshifting into 1st all time when I stop. When I pull away it starts off in 2nd for less than a second then drops into 1st. When I manually select the gears it always gets the right one.

It bounces from time to time between 3rd and 4th at around 50 mph or so if I'm going up a hill too.

Any ideas on this one?

Check the throttle pressure cable at the throttle body to see if it's hanging up. You can pull on it and feel it pull back into the trans. If you find nothing there you most likely have crap in the governor assembly hanging the valves up. This involves pulling the transfer and extension housing to access the governor. The reality is if there is something in the governor hanging it up then something is probably coming apart in the transmission or converter. Changing the fluid and filter will probably do nothing but piss you off.

I think mine is doing the same thing. It also has intermitent no reverse.
Busted D1 is your reverse also acting up?
I think your feeling the converter lockup going in and out at 50MPH that is kinda normal

Man I sure hope its the cable hanging up on mine. My fluid is as bright red as you can get. I just can't believe ther is something coming apart in this trany.:banghead:

Yep mine does it too, funny I forgot all about the reverse thing. I would say you and I have the same issue without a doubt.

Let me know what you find. I have already had one transmission leave me in the middle of Kansas once, I have to go back across there again this week. My luck is so sh*tty.

I checked the cable while just sitting in the driveway with it running and could not see any binding. I got a feeling it is the governer acting up. I don't think it will strand us. But it is anoying.
The trany was the last thing I thought would act up. Mine only has 110k miles on it .
