96 DI issues

I am looking at a few discoveries, and had some questions about symptoms in one of them. Im not saying "this is the one" just trying to get a handle on possiblities.

It was cold, no obvious leaks when I started it up. Backing down the driveway the rpms would drop down a bit and the motor would shake. Give it a bit of gas and it came right back up. No smoke out the back. Drove around until it warmed up without issue.

Second issue: Noise coming while steering, especially when turning left. I can just hear "something" that kinda sounds like water going through a pipe, so I am guessing something with the power steering. Could that just be caused by old fluid or is it time for a new box? Again, no obvious leaking.

Third issue: Engine noise. Rather than being quiet, it almost sounded like a diesel when going up a hill. I am guessing an intake leak and an exhaust leak, which might explain the first issue.

Transmission noise: It makes a bit of a whine while driving around. Shifts were smooth, and the transfer case worked VERY easily when switching from 4hi to 4lo. Could the whine be due to low or old fluid?

110k miles on it.

Regarding the trans noise. LRs have a lot of things turning going down the road. mine makes a noticable noise as I think most do. there is also the clunk you get in the drive lines which seems to be normal. Without hearing it hard to tell if its beyond normal. Also my engine can sound "Diesely" under load (wow is that even a word) but runs good. The other noises are hard to speculate without hearing. There is lot of knowledge on this site so I bet all your questions get answered. And did you say no leaks? :D

Yeah I know.. no leaks, something must really be wrong!

As for the diesel sound, its.. louder than normal. I have driven quite a few discos, and this was not the same sound. Sitting at idle the engine was also quite audible, though not obnoxious or anything.

The transmission has a high pitched background whine that again, I havent heard in any other disco.

I replaced the fluids and added Lucas transmission treatment, it quieted down the whine quite a bit.

Also sounds like the power steering unit might be low on fluid. I'd check.
Maybe they cleaned up the signs of leakage befoer you drove it. I have a 96 116K miles. I agre that you can be picky. There seem to be lots of D1s out there. Good luck finding the "the one".
