96 P38 with No Low Range?????

Hello everyone,

I have a 1996 Range Rover 4.0 SE without Low Range. Whenever I try to move the shifter into low range, I get the beeping and flashing from the low range side of the H-Gate. This continues (more than 15 seconds) and if I try to select a gear, I get the expected select neutral message on the display. I have had my Rangie in the shop on two previous occassions and as per the LR dealer?s recommendations, I replaced the Shifter and the Transfer Case Shift Motor, neither of which fixed the problem.

At some point the previous owner inserted a 20 amp fuse into F11 and cruised around in the Transfer Neutral setting. I don?t know if this was to cover up my current problem, but I have removed the fuse to eliminate the constant Transfer Neutral message.

The only things left to replace are the Transfer ECU and the Gear Selector Switch, right?

And before I get blasted for asking this question, I have searched the archives and haven?t come up with a solution yet. So does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jody

are you holding it in N on the low side long enough for the change to take place?

I think so, unless it takes longer than 20 seconds for the transfer motor to make the switch from high range to low range.

when you select a gear in low range, even thogh you get the message, have you tried to let it drive? What will the car actually do regardless of what the computer tells you?

they car stays in high range and the low range continues to flash, beep, and the select neutral message is displayed.

The motor that changes the high range to low range is probably burnt out or the ecu is damaged. I have seen this in a few - if yours is broken you are lucky that it has failed into high range most of them fail into neutral.

It's also possible that the motor that selects gear range on the BW was removed and intalled improperly.

It may need to be removed from the tcase housing and then actuated via the H-gate shifter. If it spins then it functions properly but it is possible that when installed it was topped out in either the hi or low direction (clockwise and counter-clockwise) contrary to the orientation of the H-gate shifter.

That is to say, that the gear range selector motor can be installed regardless of which direction the gear is in. If the motor is topped out in low, but you install it with the H-gate shifter on the HI side, when you attempt to shift to low via the H-gate the motor will not be able to spin further in the low direction and will leave you in HI range.
