Question from my guy David, at the shop today he couldn't find the right wrench for the bolts on the valve cover. Pretty sure that was the problem.
Standard wrenches and mm didn't seem to work for him, if any info. thx, kris

correct. 8mm 12 point also works as its only .002 bigger and low enough torque to not damage anything anyway

I found this on a site awhile ago and saved it as a to-do project. I dont recall if it was from this forum or another as to give proper credit.

Valve Cover Bolts with Allen Head ($10)

So I needed to do a little valve cover and injector R&R and I was informed that you are supposed to replace the valve cover bolts when you do head gaskets, which I did not do. Not wanting to stick with the stupid 12 pt 8mm head bolts, I drove to lowes and set upon a quest to find a better replacement. I was surprised to find that the bolt fit in NONE of the metric size holes to tell me what thread size the bolt was. It did, however, fit in one of the FREEDOM UNIT size holes perfectly. I ended up with four (I didn't get the inside bolts yet, only the outside.) 1/4-20*1-1/4 size bolts with allen heads, and they're stainless steel so they're beautiful compared to the stock bolts.

The Land Rover valve cover bolts have sealant around the head of the bolt where it contacts the valve cover. I'm not sure how critical it is, but I replace those bolts every time because of that.

When replacing any valve cover bolts (or oil pan or trans pan bolts) I use washers with a rubber gasket on the back. These are used mostly for metal siding or roofing, and have the added advantage of not letting you torque the bejesus out of the bolts. I'm sure they have a proper name, check with your local hardware guy.
