96 Tacho Problems

Hi All,

Hoping someone may be able to offer me some help. I have a 96 V8 5 spd that has recently developed tacho troubles. It seems that at almost any time the tacho will simply drop to zero (ie no revs). Now, this is obviously not the case as I am doing 60 miles/hr...anyways, thinking about it it seems worse when cold and becomes less frequent as it warms to operating temp. So the tacho sporadically falls, when you depress the clutch, or let it our, or are simply in gear. So there is no specific event it seems to correspond to.

Does anyone have any ideas, perhaps had this prob before. A search reveals nothing, but that may be because of new site???? Does anyone know from where the input to the tacho comes as many recent water crossings could have upset some connections ( I'm hoping)

Thanks

when my 95 has tach issues it has always been due to Alternator issues...

those issues being one of two things...

1. loose wire on the Alt... simple fix... tighten the nut that holds the wire on the back of the alternator

2. Alternator going bad... simple fix... replace alternator
