I am looking to purchase a 97 se from a dealer with only 60k and very good condition. the only problem is all the dash warning lights are on when key is off. nothing works in binnacle and passenger window does not work. everything else functions properly. Runs smooth shifts nice looks garage kept and car fax shows dealer maintained. my thoughts are that it could be main fuse box and becm issue. what would you pay for it? If I can get it for around 2k and repair becm it should be a nice rig. it already has dealer installed coil conversion and interior looks brand new.

sorry dupe post

Thanks rover mac I believe they have one remote and a key, I would probably purchase another remote and replace batteries when I do the repairs.

Well....if thats all that wrong...fine. I 'm betting not. Dude...been there, done that...twice! Get it cheap as you can, and best of luck.

Thank you all for the feedback I am going to throw them the 500 offer and see if they bite otherwise I am sure they will push it back to auto auction and only make about 500 any way

I always wanted a p38 but from all my research having one is allot like owning a boat (break out another thousand). But because it only has 60k and the guys at landrover gave me positive feed back on past owners and service history I think it may be worth the gamble.

Cheaper the better. ;)
Scrap value in Ca is around $700.
I paid $1k for my salvage titled 01 RR with 94K.

Look carefully at the following and use as negotiation points.

mechanically they are simple enough especially with the GEMS, the interior plastic is poor imitation Papier-m?ch?.
Check sunroof works, easier to swap out complete assembly but still a pain.
Check low range works.
Check HVAC (no book light)
Check central locking works and door actuators dont make strange noises. Also do windows go up and down (window regulators).
Look for transmission and drivetrain clunk especially engaging reverse. transmission problems (RR in drive with parking brake on ) Check for Diff noise / whine .
Check Head gaskets, Coolant leaks, and maybe an exhaust gas test for the expansion tank.
Oil leaks from the engine front cover, rocker covers, and oil pressure switch. Does the oil light go out immediately upon firing up ?
The SRS light, does it go out? (if not check yellow connector under passenger seat)

Good luck with the negotiation.

The last owner lived at the end of a long dirt road, the kind of dirt that is of a talcum consistency. everything was clean and oil free and it was sitting on lot and nothing has disturbed the talcum dust coating the motor and drive train. previous owner kept it in garage and only used it when he was visiting his second (or third) home. interior looks brand new, rubber window seals are still supple and hoses on engine have not hardened or cracked. it still has the original equipment tires on the rover but do need replacing @ 60k. because the state of the BeCM the gauge cluster does not work and all lights are on, but it runs and drives smooth. locking works great, sunroof works, low range works. one window front passenger did not roll down. The rover dealer sent me the notes and talked to me about its service history. the last thing they did was replace airbags with springs replaced rotors and pads, and serviced front steering, swivels and did a complete oil change, eng, tran, diffs (1k ago) my initial offer of 800 shot down so I may go with 1800 next. because it is a well sorted 4.0 gems it is at least a spare for my 150k 99 D1 SD gems. I have not looked into what else would transfer to my disco.

My initial plan was to rebuild Becm and replace main under hood fuse box assembly, fluids (radiator flush), and maybe o rings at heater. exhaust was also replaced with borla stainless recently. Idaho is very dry no salt on roads so rust not an issue. so a good wash/wax and leather care and drive it.

Sorry the $800 offer did not fly :(

If you do the O rings on the heater core , i would swap the heater core for an Audi one and get rid of the O rings.

All metal 1998 Audi A6 Quattro part # 399910 http://car.stuff or from Napa or Pep Boys, make sure it is a metal one with no plastic end caps /hose outlets.

Only mod required is to knock out the plastic ridge inside the heater box once the original is removed, (long screwdriver and a hammer worked for me)

5/8 Inch outlets on the Audi core
3/4 Inch on LR

Dayco 5/8 to 3/4 adaptor part # 80424

Replaced aluminium heater pipes with 5/8 heater hose on my 97 . Still need to do this on my 01.

Good luck with the ongoing negotiations.
