'97 D1 - Eating Oil

Hi,

I was hoping that you would be able to help me with advice on what could possibly be wrong.

My vehicle had issues of requiring a top up of oil every 2 weeks. There was a leak from the Valve cover gasket which was visible on the gasket, and leaked onto the manifold and was burned off (never any drips on the ground).

I had my engine taken in an had that repaired. I also had new Catylytic converters put on, and cylinder head work done.

When I received my rover after being in the shop for three weeks the starter motor decides to die only after me having it a week :( I then had that replaced with a new starter, and an oil change.

3 weeks later my engine oil light came on and stayed on. I pulled over and checked the fluid level on a flat roadway, and there was no oil on the dipstick. I had to pour in 3.5 litres of oil to get the oil level to the minimum level line on the dipstick.

My vehicle went back to the shop and it was found out that the PVC valve was not working and oil was passing through that. That was fixed as well as a fresh oil change.

Two weeks into having my rover back I see that the engine is still eating through oil. I have had to add 3 litres to top it up.

What could be wrong here? Thoughts, suggestions, and comments are appreciated. I am worried that the new cats are going to have a shortened life span if this continues.

There is no blue smoke in the exhaust, no oil burning odour, and no drips on the ground... is this blow through?

My 96 started drinking oil after head gasket install with resurfacing of heads. Sucking a quart per 250 miles. Tried a pcv change with no improvement. We figure maybe it lost the compression relief of bad gaskets! I dunno. Amazing that it can suck that much oil and still run great and with zero smoke. So...bottom line is I am of no help as usual but you have my sincerest sympathy.

a couple of quarts a month isn't going to show up from the tail pipe.

i have a 96 with 160k, i add exactly no oil between oil changes which are usually more like 4k apart.

that being said, it is apparent that the majority have to add oil between changes.

Hi,

Thank you all for the replies :)

I am having to add about 3 litres (3 quarts) every two weeks now. It used to be that I would add 1 litre every month or so, but now 3 litres (3 quarts) every two weeks seems like a lot of oil.

It is at 187,000 km (116,196 miles). Every two weeks I do about 900 km (560 miles), and that seems like wayyyyy too much oil.

The more I hear back the better :)

Thank you!

I failed to mention mine has 132K miles. Used no oil prior to head gasket repair.

Good to hear someone is using a bit more oil than I am! My next move is to switch to cheaper oil.

With that much oil loss you must leave a nice cloud while driving. I assume you've looked under the engine to see if everything is oil soaked.

My 2000 DII now requires a liter per 1000km. I just did the heads. It didn't consume oil before. Everything seems fine..........I'm stumped.

Sounds familiar. Have you changed the oil you are using?

I should add, that I am using Mobil1 15w50 fully synthetic. I see that most D1's are in the 10w30 - 10w40 range. I am thinking of using a semi-synthetic high mileage oil that has a conditioner in it for the seals, gaskets, etc.

Thoughts?
