I have already searched this out..
Started last night, won't go this morning. I have been tinkering with it all day!!
oil smelled like gas, changed it out.
cleaned plugs,
Battery good,
wants to start, little back fire noise coming from the engine,
Stepper motor!!!!Mine is different than the one in the manual and the one in the Parts cross reference. the 4 pin connector is at a 90 to the unit and the unit bolts on to the plenu with 2 small scews, one of which i broke!!
took fuel pump fuse out, gave it a crank

Can anyone help? I am going back over tommorrow to try again.

Can anyone explain the dealio withj my Stepper motor and why it is different?

Boy am I frustrated right now!!Ever seen a grown man about to cry?

Go buy a can of 2+2 carb cleaner and put the little straw on it that comes with the can. Have someone crank it while you give it a little squirt into a vacum port
If it starts for a second and then shuts off its gas related , or the lack there of...

Kyle,Thank s for the speedy reply, I may try that this evening, but what about the part confusion on that stepper motor, any insight on that?

That wont stop it from running. It will jsut stop it from idleing right....

i am betting the fuel pressure is too low to run the thing. or the connections are corroded or something like that. though the pump is working it might not be working hard enough,

like the kyles red rangie

My wife?s disco would not start this morning. It would turn over but would not start Cranked on it for a while trying diffrent things but it never would act like it wanted to start.

Fuel at the rail
Had spark
Swapped MAF with my disco (had a problem with the MAF before)

Called up a rover mechanic and he told me to unplug this little brown plug and try to start it.

http://www.slickrockfabrication.com/content/needssorted/brownplug.htm

Vroooommmm it was purring like a kitten.

Let the disco warm up for a few minutes, turned off the disco plugged the little brown connector back in and drove it to his shop to have the sensor replaced.

Hopefully that fixed the issue and it was not just coincidental. Anyone know what that little sensor does?

Just thought I would share my experience

I will try the brown plug in a few minutes, the stepper motor is the on in the FAQ section, everywhere i went pulled out a different looking part. In the dealers parts book it doesn't look like the one in the photo either. the napa part had an instruction sheet that showed both, but called the one I have DESIGN 2, and nobody could help me.
I sized one up at Carquest parts and installed it.
My friend and i tried more tricks last night, there is defintely spark, there is fuel squirting out of the Schreader Valve when you try that as well.
I am going to try the gas treatment and the brown plug trick next.
wish me luck!!

grant, get a fuel pressure gage and screw it onto the valve on the fuel rail. test the pressure.

when you key it on so the dash lights come on it should cause the fuel pump to prime the system getting pressure up to about 34psi. then when it starts it should stay around 34-37 psi. but worry about that once you get it running.

if it's less than 34psi it is an issue we need to talk about.

as kyle says spray a little starter fluid in the air intake while you are tring to start it,

sometimes this little bit of extra fuel will be enough to get it running for a second. this lets you know if the engine is starving for fuel. again pointing to the fuel pump, could also be a clogged fuel filter.

You've all overlooked his comment of oil smelling like gas... You might have an injector issues.. try the fuel pressure test, if oil is smelling like gas, then gas is leaking out of injectors & draining into your crank case. When turning over, try stepping on accelerator (it forces computer into "choke" mode... ) see if it starts then, if so, I would run a can of injector cleaner thru the tank.. take your pick BG 55, Seafoam, etc... Might be time to pull injectors, test, clean or replace....

Can't help you with the stepper motor, sorry, but like someone else said, this will not cause a no start.. it will just effect the idle.

still no luck, now I must charge my battery. when i pulled my the brown sensor it wanted to go for a bit but fell into the old routine and then heard some backifires in the manifolds.

Is there a possibility I have a timing type problem, must be a sensor or something that tells those plugs whent to fire?

got the beast started, had the boys push it into the staion at shift change, opened the hood, changed out the plugs, and found mouse nest on my block, drivers side, behind the plenum!!.....so I pulled that out, all the while my battery is on charge....went to start it up and VROOOOM!!running like a top!! Question, What is the rubber hose that comes off of the end of the fuel rail on the drivers side, from a round plug like looking thingy is it a vent, or is it supposed to be attached to something??? I think it may have beens some wter in the system that froze up a bit, the weather has been wonky with warm and cold snaps
thanks Dwebbers!! :D !!! Must place my order for more sponser ship type stuff!!!
