'98 D1 Transmission Issue

I need some technical advice. My transmission went out on my 98 D1. I was driving heard a clunk and lost power to the wheels. I checked to make sure the gear had not popped into neutral. Once home, I checked the trans fluid. A little low so I added a quart and moved the gear from drive to neutral to reverse and back again. No luck. There is now a loud humming but still no power to the wheels.

Have I lost the transmission? If so, does anyone know where to get one for a fair price? Also do I need to get a transfer case as well if I am replacing the transmission?

FYI, I live in Huntersville, NC if there is anyone to reference to do the work. This project is above my skill set.

Thanks

Some others may chime in here but for the sake of diagnosis:

-Under the truck you have both drive shafts still connected, and neither is spinning-yes?

Likely something you already confirmed but worth going over as a start point b/c there could be several reasons why your engine is no longer transmitting power to the wheels, the transmission just being one of them. The above helps narrow the problem down.

Assumption on my part but we're talking an auto here vice manual (98 manuals are pretty rare, but asking to confirm/deny.)

Likewise in terms of putting the truck in gear, you confirmed both the transmission selector was in gear (and feels normal moving through the range of gear choices) as well as the CDL was in 4HI (and didn't pop out into neutral).

If all the above was implied in your post, please ignore but if you're starting from scratch good to start with the simple and work from there.

Ray,
Yes, the drive shafts are connected.
The transmission is an automatic.
The CDL was in HI and had not popped out and the gear selector is moving smoothly.
Thanks...I should have been clearer in my description.

so no other noises besides a hum, you're sure from the transmission? can you jack up and see if any wheels move in gear (would require all four corners to be off the ground if not disconnecting driveshafts).

I would think if the transmission is gone, then it would either not go in gear or make horrible noises when you go through the gears.

Im leaning towards transfer case issues.

When my transmission went I lost the ability the shift into any of the forward drive selections, reverse and neutral where my only options. Then before I removed it, the transmission wouldn't even allow me to enter reverse.

Get all four wheels off the ground and rotate them, if you can.

I would look at the t-case first, drain the fluid and see it any large metal pieces drain out.

Update:
I went to move the D1 into the garage. I started it, put in in gear, and no movement. I checked under the D1. The rear drive shaft, no movement, but the front drive shaft is spinning and making a lot of noise. I cut off the engine and proceeded to push the D1 into the garage. Now the front differential is leaking significantly.

What do I do now?

you broke the cross pin in the front differential

Easy fix, unless you poked a hole in the diff cover when it broke.

By a used front differential and tear everything apart and put back together.

All good, just wanted to start with it from the beginning and work through the range of possibilities and start eliminating. As your follow on post points towards and others have pointed out you may well have broken your front dif-which is good news compared to the transmission. If its in the garage I'd open it up to see what's going on in there.

just recently went through a similar issue though at this point mine seemed to simply be lack of fluid in front diff and heat (causing entire front end to lock up-not my rover).

but i agree, remove front DS, drain front and pull axles, pull diff cover and see whats up...go from there.
