'98 DI Stereo Installation Question

I got tired of listening to the shitty audio from the casette ipod adapter. So I bought a Sony head unit with front USB input. I did a lot of research on here for DI head unit upgrades and amp bypass. When I went to find the amp "behind he glove box/in the right kick panel" I couldn't find it. I even had the old radio on and started unplugging connectors to anything that looked like it might possibly be an amp (which wasn't really anything I saw), to no avail. I remembered in the past sometimes while driving, I would move my foot backwards and hit the panel below the driver's seat and the radio would change sound, hit it again with my heel and it would go back. So I took a look behind the panel below the driver's seat and found a +/- 1" x 6" x 12" amp looking thing with twisted pair wires that somewhat color matched the wiring diagram I had. Apparently this is the amp location on the '98 models as I unplugged the connectors and spliced the input wires to the corresponding output wires, and wired my new head unit accordingly and it sounds great.

I'm just wondering if I am the first one to run into this amp location on a DI, and why everyone is running wires from the new head unit to the amp when they are already there.

Yes, just recently someone (perhaps on LRF) encountered their amp under the driver's seat. As far as wires...I don't think they run new wires to the amp, but if they are not using the factory amp, some find it easier/better to run new wires to the speakers. I wouldn't understand running new wires to the amp either. They have harnesses to adapt to the factory wiring.

I could be wrong but I think the amp under the seat was a LSE thing as they have DVC subs in the rear door.
