yeah we dont trust the engine at all. never did. the customer bought it himself from england for some sweet deal, but from the day it was installed it always had the most random knock. even had the thing rebuilt. crank tested and all, but still knocked. finally it came in, the starter would just spin, so i replaced the starter, same thing. took the replacement out and found we could turn the ring gear by hand. in a way, i'm glad its over.

What's the plan for that truck?

the guy wants to sell it. for what i dont know. we'll pull the engine and determine if the crank broke or if its just some sheared bolts, but either way i think we'll scrap the block and put another TDi in it.

So I am assuming you did the conversion and the rebuild. I am guessing by having the crank tested you had it magnafluxed too looking for cracks and didn't find anything? Did you by any chance do anything with the flywheel? The fact that it knocked before and after the rebuild casts suspicion on the flywheel/bolts. Now this is just me, and I know why at this point you would be thinking of pulling the motor instead, but I would drop the trans/tcase and have a look, especially if I had confidence in the rebuild I had just done. You can have it out of the way in less time and you won't have to crack open the cooling system, mess with the oil lines, compressor, steering pump, etc. Did you use the Tdi crossmember or keep the v8 one?

it was definitely always an engine knock and the trans was rebuilt. no signs of damage on the first engine pull. our best guess is that while the crank may not have been cracked, it may have been slightly twisted. i would think we would notice bad flywheel bolts on the first engine pull considering we tore the whole thing down. its really just been a nightmare situation. time wise between pulling the engine or trans is negligible. it is what it is now. everyone is going to have to eat their share.

This is why I would never do a conversion for a customer. You are married to the car and customer for life. Even if they sell it to someone else.
Same with all these Vanagon Subaru conversion idiots.

i hear ya. we did an Isuzu diesel conversion for a customer too (not our idea) and i dread the day it takes a shit because you technically can't import parts for the damn thing.

Like my Toyota Diesel Forklift. We have had to get very creative to keep that beast running. I will admit that motor is bullet proof.
