I have a starting issue I can't figure out. When I turn the key, I hear a click and that is it. I've checked the battery. 2 Year old Otima Red Top, seems fine, sat it for a day or two on the charger and it's fully charged. Also lights and aux power seem to be OK too. I thought it might be the shifter lock out as the shifter isn't as smooth as it used to be and sometimes to get it to crank, I have to shift into neutral, then shift back into park before it would crank. I took the shifter cover off and I can see the shifter solenoid working... it seems fine. Ocassionally, it will start. I'm not sure what will cause it to turn over, but every now and then I turn the key and everything is fine. I shut it off and it won't start again. Only a click. Weird! Is there some other short of shifter lock out in play?

TIA

I found a thread on the XYZ Switch. Seems it tells the ECU the location of the shift lever and won't let it start if not in Park. Mine won't start either in Neutral. Could that still be the XYZ switch?

Just more out loud thoughts. I can hear the click when the shifter is P or N. But if I try to turn the key in any other gear there is no click at all. Weird.

It probably isn't the xyz switch if it only clicks in P or N. Swap the starter relay in the engine fuse compartment for one in a different position and see if it starts without a problem.

Just to follow up... turned out the stater was dead. I disconnected it from the battery and used a battery charger to try and turn over the stater before I took it out. no go! Got a new starter from NAPA for $179 and we're good to go.

Thanks everyone!
