A/C Problems

I have been searching through the forums and have not yet found an answer to my specific problems. If possible please advise.

Last week my A/C was not blowing cold air. The compressor was powering on, however I did note that the button on the dash did not light up. So I took the Disco to a shop I grew-up working at and had refrigerant added. At this time the pressure in the system was getting extremely high (>400) and in looking at the condenser fans noted that the one on the passenger side was not working.

I replaced the defective fan motor. Now neither fan is working. However, when I jump the fans directly to the battery they both run strong.

I *think* the A/C switch is bad. When I depressed it last week the compressor kicked on. When I depress it now, it no longer does. However, I am green when it comes to Discos and all their various switches and relays, so I would like to ask your advice.

Does this sound like a bad switch, or a bad relay, both, or something else?

How do I actually test the switch? I pulled the switch out, but can't find another switch with the same configuration to try a swap with. I have read people mention jumping the switch to see if the A/C works. Which wires do I jump?

A couple other points: I hear a relay click when the rear A/C switch is depressed, but not the front. Should the condenser fans come-on if only the rear A/C is running?

Thanks for your help!

Jon

Thanks for the suggestion.

I jumped the compressor and it seems to blow cold air. So the compressor itself seems OK.

So the switch seems to be a common culprit. As noted the light doesn't come on when depressed (sounds psychological). Barring any other suggestions I will try to track-down a replacement switch and see if that solves the issue.

As an additional check I tested for power at the a/c switch and noted that there was one hot wire. When I jumped the wire with a test probe (with the probe grounded) the compressor kicked-on and blew cold air (but the fans still did not work). So does this sound like a bum switch?

If so, does anyone know where I can find one? I checked Rovers North and they don't seem to carry the a/c switch.

Yes, sounds like the switch is shot. had the same issue. What you can try is to push it fully in and lock the with something (for me the hair clip of my daughter worked - dont tell her)

Try you luck at the scrappies or just get a new one from the stealership. How much can it be?
